Default IP address translation

Hello,
I am running Win98SE on a Compaq notebook and am trying to connect to the
internet through my router. I am able to ping an internet site if I use
their IP number, but cannot ping them by using their name. The address
comes back as 0.0.0.1 when using their name. When using IE6, I can reach a
web site by typing in the address IP, but not by using their name.
Other computers on the router do not have this problem. I have removed
and reinsatlled all network components in the control pannel. Have also
reinstalled wsock32.dll. Everything appears normal when I run winipcfg and
release/renew.
Any help on this would be gratly appreciated.

tnx, Robert Hanley

Search your computer for a hidden file called HOSTS. Rename to HOSTS.OLD and
test.

Thanks Sandi. I renamed the HOSTS file and rebooted, but got the same
results.

Hmmm, run this command:

ipconfig /flushdns

The address translation started working again, just as mysteriously as
when it stopped working. I must have done something, but still do not know
what it was. All is well that ends well, guess.

I have the same problem and I tried what was suggested with no luck. The only
exception is that my customer loaded some software provided by Covad for
their DSL. They had Windows 98 and I upgraded to SE and still have the
problem. I have placed the computer on my network and the setup is the same
as my other Windows 98 machine but this one won't work. There is no firewall
on the computer.

Any help is so much appreciated.
