Default Logging on into the internet takes much time

I have a win98 SE, and when tryin to connect to the internet using my
dial-up modem, after seeing the message of "Logging on into the internet", I
have to wait much, until it gets connected.
What's the reason?

Dear Sandi
I'm neither using winXP nor win98. I'm using winMe. When I say "I am using"
it doesn't mean that I myself am using it. I sometimes tell you the problems
of friends.
I checked your advice in WinMe, but I found no "Log on to network". I will
check it in win98, too.

Thanks
Javad

I just read a message wherein you said you are using Windows XP.

To fix this problem in Windows 98 go to IE tools, internet options,
connections. Turn off 'log onto network' for your dial up connection.

Dear Sandi and Javad
Thanks for both of you. I had the same problem. I removed the check for
"logon to network" and it worked.
Now another question. Where should we use this check mark?

TIA Rasoul Khoshravan

Rasoul,

Its rarely, if ever, required; I would suspect only for internal company
networks.
