Default DNS problem

On my windows 98 PC, I can ping by IP address at the command prompt, but not
by DNS name. When I go to IE (ver 6 SP1) neither way works. I am on a DSL
connection and have tried with both dynamic and static IP's. I my laptop on
the DSL connection, and it works fine. I re-installed TCP/IP and even
re-installed Win98 over the top of itself, and the problem remains. Any
ideas?

Search your computer for a hidden file called HOSTS. Rename to HOSTS.OLD.

I am having the same issues but it is with IE 5.0. I also reinstalled the
TCP/IP and reinstalled Win98 over the top of itself. I heard that there might
be a security fix for it in the Q832894.exe knowledge base articles of
microsoft. I am going to try that next. It is part of SP2 for 5.5. I hope it
works as I am traveling back and forth cause the computer is in another
location.

You certainly should not be running IE5.0. Please update to the latest
version of IE for your operating system.

General advice (click here for advice specific to shared internet
connections):

Also, try running the following command from a DOS window:

ipconfig /flushdns
