Default WORD won't open

This error message is often caused by a corrupted Normal.dot template file.

Do a search on your PC for files called 'Normal.dot' (without the quotes),
and rename/delete any found.
reboot, and try Word again

You mean Word will automatically regenerate a new Normal, dot to replace the
deleted one? Must say, I didn't know that one.

I usually start a new word file and save it as a .dot file naming it
Normal2.dot.

Then I rename Normal.dot to Normal.d_t and rename the fresh Normal2.dot to
Normal.dot so I get the exact "virgin"page that *i* want whenever I start a
new Word document. While at it I also specify the Zoom figure so I get nice
big characters on my screen.

Pity they no longer specify a Margin to Margin Zoom in the ViewZoom Menu.
Some things progress while others regress, I guess.

And while at it, I prepare some other Blanko.dot files as well which serve
as templates in Word. .

Yes - Word generates a new Normal.dot template if the program can't find one
existing in the usual places.

FWIW - A brand new "clean" installation of Word does not install a
normal.dot file, it doesn't even exist on the CD. But instead, it is
'generated' the very first time that Word is run and (apart from certain
built-in defaults - the Times Roman font for example) becomes
'country/computer/printer' specific. Hence, it can be deleted at any time
(particularly when it becomes corrupted!!) and a 'brand new' version will be
generated next time Word is run.
