Win98 (NOT SE) Not Liking Ethernet Cards
I've got an old computer that I'd like to get Internet on, but it runs
Windows 98 First Edition, and therefore doesn't have support for Ethernet cards (only dial-up). Anyone got any ideas on how to help? Thanks, ~inkedskin108 |

Win98 (and 95 and DOS, etc.) all have support for Ethernet cards. What Win98
(First Edition) doesn't have is support for USB2. What kind of internet interface are you using? What you need is an Ethernet NIC for the computer, cables, an Ethernet router (if more than one system is being connected to the internet) and the DSL or Cable modem. If any part of this system is USB2 instead of Ethernet, you'll need to convert from USB2 to Ethernet using a switch or router designed for this purpose. When you install the Ethernet card (either an ISA or PCI, though ISA will be limited to 10Mbps instead of 100 or 1000) you'll also need to make sure to set up the networking software components to use it. In many cases, Windows sets these up automatically, but you may also need to go into the Network applet in Control Panel in order to add/remove components or to tweak them. Please post back with more detailed descriptions of all of the equipment you have. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User "inkedskin108" wrote in message ... No. But unless your hardware simply won't support it, I would recommend IE
6. What version of IE do you have? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User "inkedskin108" wrote in message ... Do I need IE6 to do this? |

On that computer I have IE4, but I tried to install IE6, but it needs an
Internet connection to do that! See, I'm preparing this computer for my friend, so do I need to go to his house and plug in the computer to his Internet? This computer is, shall we say, an "Internet virgin" :] It's never been connected to the Internet. I installed Windows 98 FE, and also used the Year 2000 Update and some other MS Win98 upgrade CD. ...Sorry I can't be more specific, but if you need details, ask and I'll tell 'em. "Gary S. Yes, IE6 needs an internet connection to install over the internet. But a
machine using IE4 should be able to make that connection and download IE6. I'm not sure I understand your dilemma. Are you saying you don't want to connect to the internet before the machine is fully updated and protected? -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User "inkedskin108" wrote in message ...
