Default USB cross over network adapter

Hello ,
I had recently purchased a usb 1.0 communication cable by
Synet i believe and it seems to work just fine with the
proprietary software provided. However, this program is
just as archaic as the original win 3.1 explorer/file
manager. I'm hoping to find a direct connect solution
within windows or by rescripting a port to have
connectivity and perhaps share internet connection. My
systems both run win 98se and one is dual booting w2k.
Thanks , Jim
