Default Internet explorer doesn't work

My Win98 pc is connected to the internet via a Netgear wireless router. Last
week I installed Norton Internet Security. Since then, Internet Explorer just
says page cannot be displayed.

The strange thing, is that from the Dos Prompt I can ping ip addresses and
website names succesfully. If this was a DNS error I would expect to be able
to ping ip addresses but not websites.

What gives?

Well, I'd guess that it's likely NIS blocking IE from accessing the
internet. Check to make sure that it's set to allow IE access. How? I have
no clue. I'd say read the manual but it's usually just as productive and
more fun to press buttons and look around that way. (I'm not kidding. I
never read the manual until after I've played with almost every setting.
It's not the most productive method but it does teach one the in's and out's
of the application fairly well.) The only Norton product I allow near my PCs
is an old Norton Ghost application that I use for cloning drives. I'd wager
the firewall functions in NIS are blocking your IE though, at least that's
what it sounds like to me from what you've said.

I should have mentioned that even with NIS disabled, I still can't make IE
work. I was wondering if this is a winsock error. But I would know how to
track it down.

You can/should check that. Here's a link that might help, it says httpS but
should be the same process to re-install TCP/IP regardless:

Err Msg: Cannot Open Internet Site Https://Web Address...:

I've reinstalled TCP/IP and it still doesn't work. Let me explain the problem
a bit more...

This pc is connected to a Netgear ADSL Router. I can browse to the router
setup screen but no further. I have two other pc's connected to this router,
and they work fine. I can ping web addresses from the command prompt. It's
got me really stumped.

Well it could be a winsock problem, this page has some information and
options:
