My friend has a WIN 98 SE. Inadvertently, it also had Norton 2.0 meant for
Win 95. I have removed it and installed AVG 7.0 Free Edition which is working well. However, when starting the screen shows as under: QUOTE Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. The Windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file, but the device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstall or set up program. If you still want to use the application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. d:\PROGRA~1\NORTON~1\NAVAP.VXD Press any key to continue. To look in SYSTEM.INI, do Start / Run / SYSEDIT / OK and select the
system.ini file. To look in the registry, do Start / Run / REGEDIT / OK and use the search function. Searching on NAVAP.VXD should be sufficient. Delete the entry wherever you find it. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Capt K Ripendran" wrote in message ... My friend has a WIN 98 SE. When you say "removed" it, I assume you removed it the proper way, by
*uninstalling it*, and not simply deleting the program. If that is not true, the simplest approach would probably be to reinstall it, reboot (to complete the installation), and then uninstall it, and reboot again to complete the uninstallation processes. Otherwise - it's time to dip into the registry, and the system.ini and win.ini files, looking for the appropriate references to Norton, and (CAREFULLY) deleting them. That's right.I actually uninstalled it from Start/Programs/Norton Antivirus
Uninstall and NOT remove it from ADD/REMOVE Programs properties. And still this problem cropped up. I can go to the Registry and delete the relevant file. Thanks for the help. Your current task is to remove the call to a file you have already deleted. You edit SYSTEM.INI by standard DOS methods, e.g. remove the whole line calling NAVAP.VXD or else disactivate the line by typing in a semicolon ; at the leftmost end of the line citing NAVAP.VXD -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada) |

You edit System.ini, Win.ini, Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, MSDOS.SYS, etc., using
Notepad or SYSEDIT. (Or, if in DOS mode, using EDIT.COM.) The first two are in the Windows directory, the last three are in the C:\ root directory. You aren't going to find what you're looking for in the Registry. Note, too, that special tools are available at symantec.com to help clean up after an uninstall that fails to clean up all detritus--which encompasses most Norton uninstalls. -- Gary S. Thank you for the input. I am NOT familiar with DOS! Could you kindly
explain it in little more detail as to how I can use SysEdit and do this EDIT? Alternately, where will I find in Symantec.com these tools to remove what is remaining? 1. I'd only recommend DOS to edit these files if you can't get into Windows. If
you're not already at lest a bit familiar with DOS usage, then you're at a disadvantage. There's usually no mouse available when you're in real DOS mode (and not just a DOS window), so you use keystrokes like Alt-S to Save, Alt-F-X to Exit, etc. You also have to know commands to navigate the file system in DOS. It would be better if you got a book or a knowledgeable friend to help you learn the basics. 2. When it comes to INI files, in Windows you can simply double-click them in most cases, and they will automatically open in Notepad, the Windows default plain-text editor. Be sure not to use anything more complicated, like WordPad or Word or WordPerfect, since these may add formatting code that will mess up the files. Other files, like MSDOS.SYS and Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, etc., you either right-click and choose Edit, or use OpenWith and choose Notepad. When using OpenWith, make sure the checkbox for "Always use this program..." is NOT checked (when available.) 3. SYSEDIT.COM is an older editor that automatically loads up the major configuration files for editing. It used to be the most commonly recommended application to use in early versions of Windows for this purpose, but most now just use Notepad or another plain-text editor (Notepad is limited in many ways, especially in Windows 9x systems, so many people have replaced it with 3rd-party utilities.) Easiest way to run SYSEDIT is to type that word into the Run box and press Enter. 4. What strikes me as strange is that you claim to know and love REGEDIT, but don't know about these other things. That's unusual. 5. As for uninstalling Norton again, that is not a straight-forward task, and I fear that you are not really up to it. For instance, I probably responded to hastily when I suggested that Symantec would have answers for you. You say that Norton AV 2.0 is what was installed. If that's true, then it's a *very* old version, and not even the Symantec site has instructions for that. They didn't even own Norton Antivirus when that version was produced. The earliest version they have data on is Norton 2000 (v. 6.0). I think, instead, that you need to deal with whatever specific issues crop up--like editing System.ini to not call for the file it's calling for, and otherwise leave well enough alone. -- Gary S. Did you find the item in SYSTEM.INI? Typically, you can simply delete the
line where it occurs. If you are concerned about this, or if the line appears to be important for some other reason (for instance, it's not just one of a series of similar lines) then copy and paste a small section of the file that includes the relevant line here and someone can tell you whether it's safe to delete. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Capt K Ripendran" wrote in message ...
