Thanks. I'll give it a try this afternoon and let you know how it works.

Am thinking one of two things happened. One is that the file that does
the
job. hotplug.dll, got trashed somehow. Or the registry lost when and how
to
use hotplug.dll file. MS has an update for this file as part of an update
package as well Try restoring this file. There is a problem with a few
Dell models with RAID controllers that's documented but no fix is noted,
and
there is a failure message in that case.

A simple solution is to update to the latest version of hotplug.dll from
MS.
Its part of a Firewire update from MS for 98SE only. It won't hurt your
PC
if you don't have Firewire.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q242975/

Let us know if it works or not.

I'm referring to my flash drives and external hard drive. I only thought
about this problem when some info on a flash drive got corrupted and I
believe it is because I didn't "safely" disconnect it.

The system tray icon you're referring to works with USB and Firewire
enclosure devices like a HD or DVD/DVD writer. Such did not appear on

my
system until I added a Firewire connected HD. Whereas when the USB
devices
had connected prior to that were a mouse, and printer with no such
icon.
Does the PC you're referring to have such removable enclosure devices?

On one of my 98SE systems, I am not getting the notification that a
USB
device is plugged in and there is no icon in the systray, therefore I

do
not
have the ability to safely remove it. What do I need to do to get this

on
my
system? I have that ability on all the XP systems and my 98SE laptop,

but
this one system has never had it. Is it a matter of adding something
to
the
registry? Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

What was the result of looking at the devices in Device Manager? Can you
see differences in the entries between the machines that do work and those
that don't? Are they recorded as removable mass storage devices? Did the
manufacturer have updated drivers available?

They all work on my other 98 computer. But I also just learned that they
do not work on my husband's new XP laptop. He says he never gets the
notification there. So, to sum up, the devices appear on one 98 and one XP
system, and not on one 98 and one XP system. This is getting frustrating.

This is the best site I know for USB information, although I can't see
anything that refers to your problem.

Thank you, but I noticed this problem occurs in one of my XP laptops too!
This is very strange.

Have you been able to get the "safely remove hardware" icon to
appear, I have the same problems with Windows ME.
