I've had quite a bit of trouble with this aspect of ZA on my XP box (long
story). If possible, try 'uninstalling' ZA for a day or two and see if the
problem goes with it. I've now given up with ZA (sadly) and rely on XP's
Firewall - not an option in WinMe.

Before you uninstall it, - at shutdown, when the hourglass is showing -

look
in Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) under Processes to see if there is more

than
one instance of Explorer.exe running.

Mart

Mart, you don't know how reassured I am to learn that someone else has
experienced this problem. I have a little more information to add here that
I just know is related, but I don't know what to do with it:

When I'm ready to quit for the day and at that time the hourglass is
alongside the mouse pointer the usual Start/Shutdown freezes the computer
every time! BUT, if I move the mouse pointer and hourglass to the task bar
or over a desktop icon the hourglass disappears, and while leaving the
pointer-hourglass in place normal shutdown is possible. Now, riddle me that
one if you can.

As for multiple Explorer entries on Ctl-Alt-Delete, no, I've never seen
anything particularly unusual then.

Sorry that didn't help. Maybe something here will:

http://66.39.115.252/win4/a/shutdown.htm

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=149962

http://support.microsoft.com/support/windows/tshoot/

I looked at your program list.....nothing really stood out as a source of
problem.
Wish I could be of more assistance.......please post your fix, I'm
interested.
Heirloom, old and had a nap, now time for bed

Thanks, Sir, for your thoughts. I'll check the links momentarily.

Also, please refer to another bit of information I found and sent in my
reply to Mart, just above this one. I'll keep working.

Ken,
Are you using some form of wallpaper?? If so, just for grins, disable
that and run some tests.

Hey Rick,
I believe he had mentioned shutting down everything but Explorer and
Systray and still had the issue. The last clue Ken gave may be the
key......if he puts the pointer on an icon or in the Taskbar, it doesn't
fail......I am suspecting maybe the wallpaper??? (remote, I admit, but,
worth a shot)

If this is a consistent thing you can shutdown those processes in
TaskManager to see at what point the hourglass disappears.

have a little more information for you before replying.

I'm familiar with Process Explorer and , frankly, it tells me zip. If a
heart monitor was as flat as this thin green line the patient would be

cold
stone dead. Typically System Idle is between 96-97%; True Vector, Zone

Labs
Client, and Spam Filter, all part of ZoneAlarm, comprise together about

2%;
Sysinternals itself uses about 2%. If there are any smaller trace

usages
they don't show up. The only time a spike occurs is when I deliberately
query one of the running processes and then only momentarily.

Luke, if you're reading this, the programs typically running when I do a
Ctrl-Alt-Delete are, in order: Mozilla Firefox (if I've opened Firefox);
Explorer; Zlclient (part of ZoneAlarm); Mantispm (Matador, part of

ZoneAlarm
spamblocker); Vsmon (part of ZoneAlarm); Em_exec (part of Logitech);
Systray; and Isafe (part of ZoneAlarm). For those time when I use

Internet
Explorer in lieu of Firefox I will see Cpal and Cpbrwtch (from Cookie

Pal, a
cookie screener app that I've used for years).

That's it. The hourglass and mouse pointer aren't always associated
together when I'm ready to shutdown, but perhaps 90% of the time.

Get Process Explorer, free, from www.sysinternals.com . Along with

showing

you every active process (to include background) and the amount of cpu
cycles in %, used by each, it will also keep a short recording of

running
items and their usage. In the upper right of the PE GUI, you will see

the
graph (green line), if you hover your pointer over any 'spike' it will

tell

you what process made it. Might help you narrow down what it

happening.

Indeed I am, Heirloom, a photograph of my first great-grandson. But let me
add something I recently found out:

Iconoid recommended -- and wouldn't work properly until -- I set the
desktop specifics to NOT Show Web Content and NOT use Auto Arrange. I
discovered that if Show Web Content was enabled the hourglass appeared
alongside the mouse pointer arrow. In addition, I replaced a mouse that was
stuttering with the left button and the new one came with a new driver which
included things the old one hadn't. I stripped down the "additives," and
disabled an entry or two from the startup list.

I've gotten rid of the "Working In Background" hourglass but something
else -- maybe a ZoneAlarm update -- played heck with the solitaire game that
my wife likes to relax with.

I'm taking the mouse back tomorrow to exchange it for a different model and
I've found which part of Zone Alarm fouls up solitaire.

I'm getting closer to restoring the computer to its usual proper operation
but I may a little farther yet to go.

Thanks for all your comments.

Mmm...

Ken, just for fun g try uninstalling ZA and see if that clears up
any/some/all of your anomalies. When you've done, you can soon re-install
it!!
(Save your download - that way you don't need to go on-line again until
you've re-installed it, if you are worried about your firewall)

.......and as far as your wife's solitaire game, take a peek at anything you
have set to "auto update" or "phone home" in any way, i.e. Seti at Home.
Also, any item that you have set to run automatically or at a certain time
of day/night.
Regarding the ZA, Mart, couldn't he just uncheck it in MSCONFIG and
reboot? That would be easier that the un/reinstall.
