Default Networking problems

I didn't know whether or not to post this in Win98 Networking, WinNT
Networking, or WinXP networking, but most of the problems seem to be from
a Windows 98 computer... so I picked this forum.

Here's the deal:

I have two computers, directly linked together via crossover cable. They
are on a workgroup called "Home", one is named COMPAQ and the other is
ONEBYTE. COMPAQ has Windows XP, and ONEBYTE uses Windows 98 Second
Edition. COMPAQ has a 56K modem and a NETGEAR FA310TX NIC. ONEBYTE has
something like "Intel 10/100 MBps Integrated NIC" or something (I forgot).
They both are 10/100 MBps NICs, and the following network "drivers" are
installed:

-Client for Micropsoft Networks.
-File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks.
-NIC drivers for both are installed.
-TCP/IP Protocol.
-NetBEUI Protocol.

The XP machine *MAY* have other things istalled, but I forogt what they
are.

IP's are set up on ONEBYTE (I ran the network setup wizard that XP put on
a disk for me to run on ONEBYTE.), and are what they should be.

Here are my problems:

1. The Network is slow for ONEBYTE. Shared folders are set up, and I can
access them no problem, but if I try to access my workgroup or open
Network Neigborhood, it take about 5 minutes for the "Entire Network" icon
to pop up. Therefore, internet connection sharing doesn't work.

2. This is more of an annoyance: A printer is installed on the XP machine
and it networks fine. The same printer is installed on ONEBYTE as a
network printer, and it prints fine. But for some odd reason, it doesn't
show up in the network neigborhood on ONEBYTE, when it does on COMPAQ.
It's there, but it doesn't show up. What's the deal here?
