Windows 98 comp not starting up
Have you changed the boot device sequence in the BIOS? Is there a floppy
start up disk in the floppy drive? Assuming the answers are no, can you start in safe mode (tap the Ctrl key during boot process to get to the start up menu)? If so, rename the autoexec.bat and config.sys files by changing their extension to: .old Then reboot and see if it starts in normal mode. -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "ouimetteracing" u16709@uwe wrote in message news:58e5d5c8cd2a2@uwe... Try starting the computer in Safe mode by tapping the F8 key repeatedly
during bootup. If that works, rename the "c:\autoexec.bat" and "c:\config.sys" files, then restart normally. Ben "ouimetteracing" u16709@uwe wrote in message news:58e5d5c8cd2a2@uwe... When I try restarting the comp in safe mode it comes to a black screen with
a 6 choices. 1. Normal 2. Logged (\Bootlog.txt) 3. Safe Mode 4. Step-bystep- confirmation 5. Command prompt only and 6 Saf mode command prompt only. when enter 3 on the bottom it says Windows is bypassing startup files. It then says C:\ and there I can type something to start it up. What would I type. -- Message posted via http://www.windowskb.com |

Try typing "dir /s c:\win.com" at the "C:\" prompt. If the file exists, please
repost with the directory in which it is located. If it is missing, you may have to reinstall Windows. Ben "ouimetteracing via WindowsKB.com" u16709@uwe wrote in message news:58f9fedcec258@uwe...
