Question Wizard looks for plug and play then computer locks up!

I have a windows 98 second edition and when I check on the add new hardware and then it says to click next and windows wizard will search for any plug and play devices and install them for you, it starts and i get the hour glass on the screen where the currser is usually and then nothing happens for a long time and then i finally have to shut it down all together. this hapens everytime I have chosen to try it. I ran the computer through the scan disk thorough and disc defragmentation and it showed no problems anywhere, but it still does this. I am at scsmith05 and at juno and dot com Any real good suggestions? scsmith
