3 problems
Greetings. Three problems I'm having:
1. When Windows starts, I get a message saying "ctrlpan.dll" isn't found. How do I fix this? 2. I seem to have lost my autorun.exe file from the C:\ folder. How do I get it back? 3. Weird one: when my computer starts lately, it automatically starts up a video game: Terminal Velocity. Trust me, it's not in the StartUp folder. All I know is that its executable file is called tv.exe and it's under the folder C:\Games\TermVel\. Just why does my computer want to automatically start this game? Thanks for your time. |

Actually, two more questions:
4. There're programs always running in the background called "Win Min", "Navapw32", and "pfppop70". Which of these are important Windows apps, and which can I get rid of? 5. Finally, my computer is getting ridiculously slow lately. I've scanned for viruses, used RamCleaner to free up memory, have lots of space on my hard disk, etc., and still it takes ten minutes sometimes to open, say, the Control Panel viewer. Is there some general way to get my computer running like new again (Reinstallation of something, a better virus scan, a recommended memory-leak- killing program, etc.)? Thanks again for your time. -----Original Message----- Greetings. Three problems I'm having: 1. When Windows starts, I get a message saying "ctrlpan.dll" isn't found. How do I fix this? 2. 1. See the fix he http://computercops.biz/print-1-11111.html
2. There is no reason to have autorun.exe in the C: folder. If you are having some problem, tell us about the problem. 3. There are more start up points than just the startup folder. Find and delete the reference to the game in one of these places: Programs are generally started on boot from the start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these registry run keys: 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunOnce\Setup There is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Steve" wrote in message ... 4 and 5:
Spyware/scumware/adware are causing numerous system problems. I recommend you download and use the following programs and consider removing everything these programs identify. Be aware that there are frequent updates to these programs and you need to check for them before every use. AdAwa http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ CWShredder: http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html (download link near the bottom) Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/ ************ To cut back on the number of programs starting at boot, check the programs themselves for an option not to load. You might have to double click an icon in the tray (others might require a right click) and then look for preferences or options. If you cannot find an option, look for the program in the following start up points and remove the reference to it: Start up folder on the start menu, the load= and run= lines in the win.ini and these registry run keys (use regedit.exe): 1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run 2. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run 3. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce 4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce 5. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServices 6. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunServicesOnce 7. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\ RunOnce\Setup If poking around in the registry is not for you, there is a freeware program that makes this process a lot easier to manage: Startup Manager, http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/startupcpl/ You can use msconfig.exe, startup tab, to disable programs; however, by doing so, you may lessen its value as a troubleshooting tool. There might be some double entries in msconfig--leave those for your AntiVirus program and load power profile alone as they are required. If you disable an entry in msconfig or remove it from the start up point and the program loads again after a reboot, that is an indication that you missed an option on the program itself. If you don't know what an entry is, check he http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm You can get to the boot menu by holding down the ctrl key after the memory count occurs. Select a logged boot and this creates a bootlog of what goes on during the boot process. This program will help you analyze the bootlog: Boot Log Analyzer, http://www.vision4.dial.pipex.com/ Load Failures Listed in the Bootlog.txt File 127970 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=127970 -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Steve" wrote in message ... 1. You don't want it, as it is part of the CoolWeb browser hijacker. See
he http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/ I'd also suggest a trip to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ for a copy of AdAware. These things usually travel in packs. 2. You don't want one. There is none in a proper Windows 98 installation. 3. Probably related to #2. Get rid of any files named AUTORUN in the C:\ root folder. 4. Navapw32 is part of Norton Antivirus, pfppop70 is part of your Corel software. But I suspect that Winman is a keystroke capturer - someone's spying on you. Read he http://www.recordkeys.com/howtostopit.html You definitely have spyware on your system and probably a keystroke logger. I suspect this is just the tip of the iceberg. You need some qualified, professional, hands-on help to figure out just how compromised this computer really is. -- Richard G. 2. The specific problem with autorun is that I rarely get
any autorun popups. In fact, can you tell me how to turn Autorun on? Maybe that's it. 4. Actually, it's Win Min, not Winman. And it isn't ever shown on my CTRL+ALT+DEL menu. I don't think I'm infected with RecordKeys. Thanks for the other info. -----Original Message----- 1. You don't want it, as it is part of the CoolWeb browser hijacker. Greetings. Three problems I'm having: 1. When Windows starts, I get a message saying "ctrlpan.dll" isn't found. How do I fix this? That is either program specific or a bit of nastiness from a virus/trojan/worm. A web search should lead you in the right direction. 2. I seem to have lost my autorun.exe file from the C:\ folder. How do I get it back? Do you mean Autoexec.bat ? 3. Weird one: when my computer starts lately, it automatically starts up a video game: Terminal Velocity. Trust me, it's not in the StartUp folder. Registry editing is required if it is not listed in Win.ini or in the Startup folder Do a search for the entry/term.
