AV software and PC in safe mode
If you think this thread is deep - you ain't seen nuttin' yet!g
Neither Dialup nor CD's work in Safe Mode - so you're SOL on that. You can download Stinger to a floppy on a known-clean PC, and load and run it on the baddie - see what it reports( I see you've done that- what was the result??). likewise Ad-Aware - although you may have to have fun and games with WinZip to compress and span it across two floppies. (see the WinZip instructions for that) -- Noel Paton (MS-MVP 2002-2004, Win9x) Nil Carborundum Illegitemi http://www.btinternet.com/~winnoel/millsrpch.htm Please read http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm on how to post messages to NG's or http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/f.../Mar27pmvp.asp "Jane" wrote in message ... Hi again, Have read Mike's and your posts. I would be surprised if this system **didn't** have malware and all sorts of nasties on it. Teenage boys used this system... downloading "awesome stuff". This is my friend's PC and it has beenly badly neglected. I have cleaned up everything I could find in cookies, temp files, etc. Removed suspicious apps. Scanned disk and defraged. No errors in disk scan. The oltrga.exe is likely another bad app. Back to original questions. Have read Mike and Noel's posts re running Stinger, AV, Spybot, etc. but cannot connect to AOL with that PC to get these programs. Do have Norton Int. Security 2004 disks, but am afraid of installing it with Win Me because of negative posts. Would like to run these progs then see what errors are still around. Is this thinking sound? Would have to install AV in safe mode. Not familiar with safe mode. Can I install progs in safe mode? Can I connect to internet (via AOL 7.0) in safe mode? I know all drivers aren't loaded. This thread is pretty deep. Appreciate your help, Mart and Mike. -----Original Message----- Jane, I'm more concerned than ever with 'oltrga.exe' at the moment. When you look at its Properties, what (if any) details are shown under the 'Version' tab? A search for "oltrga" - or anything like it - on Google reveals nothing! Even the 'oltrga.lgc' file is a mystery. The .lgc suffix *could* be related to anything - possibly a log file. Are you able to open it with notepad (or wordpad) and read anything which might enlighten us? How big is the oltrga.lgc file? Mart "Jane" wrote in message ... Booted PC two times in normal. Well if the 'Software House' that wrote the oltrga.exe application can't be
bothered to build their details into it (but is an old date) then I would suspect that it is even more rogue than I first thought. Try Start | Run and type "msconfig" (no quotes) in the space provided and then click OK. Look for the Startup Tab and see if there is any reference to oltrga and if so, uncheck the appropriate box. Re-boot and see if it rids you of the Oltrga error - you will probably get a 'warning' that you have something set in msconfig, each time you boot, but ignore it for the time being. Just see if the Oltrga error goes. Mart "Jane" wrote in message ... Sorry, Mart. I could have explained better. All I saw under properties for the oltrga.exe is described below. AV software and PC in safe mode
Don't worry about the viruses found in the C:\_Restore folders - they're
deactivated unless you use System Restore to go back to a time you were infected. http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=263455 explains in detail What it does do, though, is give a pointer to a possible cause of your problems - the residual of a Klez infection can be a PITA to clean up...... AV software and PC in safe mode
Hi,
While in safe mode, I've deleted the FondleWindows.exe file. Also happened to find reference to olgtra.exe in msconfig under system.ini tab in boot folder. (Sneaky devil!) Shell=Explorer.exe olgtra.exe I removed olgtra.exe part. Still have not deleted the actual exe file. Wanted to see what would happen on next boot. Reboot to safe mode working pretty well. Error re olgtra does not come up. No error windows at all! Yeah! Unfortunately, cannot boot successfully in normal mode to point where I can run stinger. Get Explorer error "An error has occurred in your program. Click Ignore.. or Click Close.." Clicking ignore does nothing. Clicking Close takes me to 2nd error "Explorer has caused an error in GDI.EXE. Explorer will now close." I click on "Close", get gray screen that stays. I press ctrl+alt+del and Close Program window comes up showing one thing running..Osd. I click on Shut Down and system seems to shut down okay. If I could get past the explorer error in normal, I might actually be able to fix this thing! Don't think I can do much else in safe mode. In the Dark Ages, before Windows, I remember making a floppy that had the self boot files (Autoexec.bat, config.sys and one other) and a program on it. Could I make a Win Me emergency boot disk, add Stinger to it and get to normal? Just brainstorming... -----Original Message----- Don't worry about the viruses found in the C:\_Restore folders - they're deactivated unless you use System Restore to go back to a time you were infected. http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=263455 explains in detail What it does do, though, is give a pointer to a possible cause of your problems - the residual of a Klez infection can be a PITA to clean up...... Great suggestion! Looked at startup tab in msconfig.
Didn't find anything there. I then went through every tab. Happened to find reference to olgtra.exe under system.ini tab in boot folder. (Sneaky devil!) Try Start | Run and type "msconfig" (no quotes) in the space provided and then click OK. Look for the Startup Tab and see if there is any reference to oltrga and if so, uncheck the appropriate box. Re-boot and see if it rids you of the Oltrga error - you will probably get a 'warning' that you have something set in msconfig, each time you boot, but ignore it for the time being. AV software and PC in safe mode
The ol****.exe file is oltrga.exe....not olgtra. Had it
written down incorrectly in my notes and didn't realize it until now. Sorry for confusion. Anyway, this routine and error is out of commission. I haven't deleted it yet, but will if/when I can get all things working in normal boot. Taking it out of system.ini took care of this error. I may break into song when I finally delete it. g When I boot up normally, I get an Explorer error "An error has occurred in your program. Did some research on GDI.exe. Think it may have to do with fonts. I saw loadfails in bootlog.txt regarding True Type Fonts. What do you think? ex: LoadStart=C:\Windows\fonts\Marlett.ttf LoadFail=C:\Windows\fonts\Marlett.ttf Failure code is 0016 Haven't had chance to check out this failure code number. FYI, I ran Stinger again in safe mode. This time I did not click on repair, only report and there were two files found containing the w32/Klez.h@MM virus. C:_Restore\Archive\FS1360.CAB\A0168847.CPY C:_Restore\Archive\FS1360.CAB\A0168848.CPY I understand that finding the virus in the restore archives should not affect this PC unless I use the infected restore points.
