My reply is at the bottom of your sent message:

Can someone pls advise a software program to recover data from an
accidentally erased external HDD?

Data Recovery Tools:
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/sy...arecovery.html

I have personally used the top one listed (PC Inspector) and had it work
quite well.

You should definitely try this : http://www.r-tt.com/
Choose data recovery option.
I recovered my data from a deleted partition and after a format !!!!
You can even recover data through LANetwork!
Just - Read carefully the instructions!

Partition Table Doctor 3.0 -- partition recovery tool.
Partition Table Doctor is the only real partition recovery software
used to recover partition for hard disk when you experience a drive error
(other than hardware failure) this versatile tool automatically
checks and repairs the Master Boot Record, partition table, and
the boot sector of the partition with an error, to recover the
FAT16/FAT32/NTFS/NTFS5/EXT2/EXT3/SWAP partitions on
IDE/ATA/SATA/SCSI hard disk drives. It can create an emergency
floppy disk or a bootable CD for partition recovery even if your
operating system fails to boot. Partition Table Doctor manager
for MS-DOS, Freedos, Windows 95/98/Me, Windows NT 4.0,
Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003.

Due to the way OE is setup I'm not sure if this is a response to a message
that's now nearly two months old or what but I flag all the questions I
answer or ask additional questions from the original poster. Sometimes
people use the same subject line so it's not a fail-proof method and
sometimes the server burps so I only get some of the messages.

For disk recovery I don't like to recommend paid tools because if the data
is that valuable they should stop using the disk immediately and take it to
a professional and that's NOT inexpensive. For home-use there's a plethora
of free tools available and they all seem to work pretty good. In fact, to
be honest, the only time I'd recommend paying for anything for this (you
have about the same chance using these tools) is when you require removing
the platters, putting them into a new case, and getting the drive to spin up
again. Other than that I can't justify paying for tools...

Data Recovery Tools:
http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/sy...arecovery.html

That is about the best you're going to get for malware-free freeware and the
tools on said site are generally fairly decent. You can pick depending on
what you need to recover but you should do alright with those.
