What does everyone think about chipsets?
I was wondering if people suggest updating chipsets with an Intel computer or
is it generally a bad idea. What are the advantages and disadvantages of updating Intel-based PC chipsets? Thanks in advance for the feedback! |

You don't update chip-sets. They are wave soldered onto a motherboard and are with them the
life of the computer. The *only* user updating factor on a motherboard is the BIOS but that should NOT be done without forethought. Now if you are talking about the chip-set software drivers then yes. It is a good thing because it will allow greatly flexibility, fix bugs and sometimes even enhance performance. For example, a newer chip-set driver may allow a Plug 'n Play device (PCI or USB) to work or work better or a faster CPU to be used. -- Dave "Dan" wrote in message ... | I was wondering if people suggest updating chipsets with an Intel computer or | is it generally a bad idea. I do vaguely remember taking in an Intel Chipset Driver update from the MS
web site a couple of years ago, that turned out to be a very BAD idea, and I HAD to either uninstall it and/or restore the registry from a previous backup. (MS eventually pulled that supposed update (Intel driver) off of their web site). I think PCR and a few others can fill in the details on that - it was a couple of years ago, as I recall. So the moral to the story is: be wary. Be very, very, wary - and aware of exactly what you are doing. Thanks Dave. I was talking about chip-set software. Sorry for not being

Thanks for the warning, Bill. I have updated Intel chip-set software in the

Ah yes, I remember that one myself. The odor is still in the room, even
though I switched to a new AMD a year later.. Do you like AMD better, Roger? I have yet to try AMD myself.

You get Intel chip-set drivers from Intel. Not from MS.

He may or may not have described it exactly right, but the WU had to do
solely with some facet of Intel's presence in the computer, and that it was was prominently mentioned in the update description, which seemed as odd then as it does now. And as Bill said it was pulled from the site shortly after being offered. Not disageeing with your logic, and in retrospect they should have followed it. David H. (I wasn't making this up, David. You can read Roger's reply).
