Default Help: WinMe is now Mac OS

Mike,

On the VPC of Win 98SE deleting Cookies| TIF w/offline content resolved
the issue. Will test this on a bare metal install of ME today.
Not sure just what MS did with WU, but it has changed and perhaps needs
some Milk of Magnesia ? w

Mow,

I also see the "this site is for users of Windows Systems, etc" when
accessing the site from Start | Windows Update on a Win Me system
running in VPC. It looks as if the WU site is having problems and
barfing somewhat vbg.

Try deleting Cookies and Temporary Internet Files [ put a check next to
'Delete offline content', too ]. That's the only definitive workaround
I've seen so far.

Strongly suggest you install the update for System Restore first. Not
sure when MS will fix this issue with Windows Update.
Of course, hopefully, one should still be able to access the Windows

Having exactly same problems as Scott and Claude - also sending me bonkers.

Recently did a clean re-install of Windows ME and now trying to add on the
updates previously obtainable via Windows Update - can't get at any of them.
I was able to do so a week or so ago during an earlier effort at
re-installing all my software.

Have tried the Microsoft registry fix highlighted by Claude - doesn't make
any difference.

IE version is 5.5 (the one bundled on my ME back-up disk).

Is this actually a problem with the Windows Update site, or can other
readers of this group with Windows ME get into the Windows Update site with
no difficulties? Badly need this fixed...

I reinstalled WinMe. I went to the Windows Update site to pick up the
updates. The first one I downloaded and installed was IE6 SP1. The Windows
Update site now thinks I'm a Mac OS and redirects me to the Windows site

Mac OS.

What is the fix?

I have reinstalled WinMe in the past, many years ago, without having this
problem.

Don't know if this will work for everyone but I have Office XP installed and
if I go to the Office update site and scan for updates I can then get to
Windows update from there. Seems to only work if I actually do the scan for
updates.

Mow,

You're the one with the contacts so I'll leave it to you to report and get
fixed. I only try and test the bl$$dy thing. vbg

I'm also pretty confident that it's more than just a problem of stale
cookies and a constipated TIF.

The Update Catalog link above sends me the same message: I'm running a
Mac.

I am pretty sure this is a Microsoft Update problem, it seems to be
intermitent, sometimes I'll get through after trying several times,
sometimes there is no way.

I have no one on the Update Team to report it to, Mike. Haven't had a
contact since August of '04.
After playing around on the ME HD I can find nothing that makes sense
here. Cookies, TIF, History, Firewall ... bah !!
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't
I did find this error in the WU.log for when the message appears, though

0x801901F4 which translates to " The server encountered an unexpected
condition that prevented it from fulfilling the request. "

CSS or a javascript issue ? Who knows ... but it's definitely server
side and I'm a client guy. Contrary to what the MVP Program thinks w

Which would indicate either TIF offline content or a Cookie issue.
Ah heck, as long as we can get the old updates, who gives a fig. Not you

I'm pretty certain that this is a server side problem and like yourself no
longer have any meaningful contacts in the WU team unlike in earlier
years. Not that, with the change in leads, I have meaningful contacts
with any area any more, everything passing now through endless
intermediaries.

I am having the same prob !!!! WU thinks I'm a mac too. I went there cause I
was told to check and see if I needed an update on my runtime library and WU
wouldn't let me. It gave me the same message as you. What is up wth that? Did
you get your prob solved?

Well miracles of all miracles. The Update Team actually contacted me and
I've given them the sections of the WU.log from a successful negotiation
and from an unsuccessful one.
All I can say is thank the stars for Susan Bradley. She knows who to
reach or how to get a response, Mike.
