Cursor Can't Reach Start Button, Systray after Change to HigherResolution
If I change my screen resolution from 960x720 to 1024x768, my cursor
cannot reach the start button, the systray, and about 1/2" of real estate on the left side of the screen. When I change it back to 960x720, the cursor can reach everything. What's causing this and how can I fix it? Thanks. Joe |

Hi Brian,
Thanks so much for your suggestion. Using the monitor controls has no effect on the accessibility to the cursor of the start button and systray. I can move the bar all the up to the middle of the screen and still can't get the cursor on it. (Moving it down also doesn't affect things either, although it wouldn't be a solution if it did, as then I'd be moving the icons and buttons out of view.) Any other ideas? Does the adapter software/settings have any way to adjust the screen size?
Does the monitor have any type of auto adjust? Does the monitor support that resolution? If not, you'll have to go lower. For now you can try accessing the start button/taskbar by Pressing the Windows key and tabbing/arrow keys. Not sure on getting to systray. or Click an icon on the desktop and press tab to bring up the strtbut/tskbar. -- Brian A. Hi Brian,
"Brian A." wrote: Does the adapter software/settings have any way to adjust the screen size? I've got a 3dfx voodoo 3 card. Are all the settings accessible by going to control panel/display? If so, I can only change the resolution. The odd thing is that as I increase the resolution, the area accessible to the cursor shrinks, and the amount of space it can't go into increases. So I'd guess that screen size might not have anything to do with it. The settings in control panel/system/display devices don't seem to affect this either I noticed that there's a grayed out checkbox in the Settings section of control panel/display: "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor." Would this be relevant? Does the monitor have any type of auto adjust? The monitor has an "auto" button. I changed the resolution up to 1024x768, pressed the auto button, the screen went dark, came back, but nothing seemed to have changed and the systray and start button remained inaccessible. Does the monitor support that resolution? If not, you'll have to go lower. It's an Eizo, FlexScan, FX C6, recommended resolution is 1280x1024, way higher than I've set it to. For now you can try accessing the start button/taskbar by Pressing the Windows key and tabbing/arrow keys. Not sure on getting to systray. or Click an icon on the desktop and press tab to bring up the strtbut/tskbar. Thanks. I find this probelm more annoying than anything else. I need the 1024x768 resolution to view one program. Otherwise my eyes like the larger icons and type. I had hoped to put the display icon in the systray and switch back and forth with one click. I can do it by clicking the display icon (which I put on my desktop), but I shouldn't have to. One other possibility is that I use a Wacom tablet instead of an ordinary mouse which is mapped to the display. It is mapped to the "entire display" so I don't think this should be a problem. I'll check with Wacom and see if they have anything on this and will advise if they do. Thanks again for your help. Joe -- Brian A. This happens when Windows gets confused about the screen size as a result of
adjustments it makes for components that are docked at the screen edge. Have you tried rebooting after making the change? Also, try dragging the control (eg task bar) to a different edge and drag it back again. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Joe" wrote in message ... ... Hi Brian, I've got a 3dfx voodoo 3 card. Are all the settings accessible by going to control panel/display? In CP Display Settings tab, you should have a Advanced button, which when clicked should take you to the 3D voodoo config window. If so, I can only change the resolution. The odd thing is that as I increase the resolution, the area accessible to the cursor shrinks, and the amount of space it can't go into increases. So I'd guess that screen size might not have anything to do with it. What is the refresh rate set at? If it's set at 85 or abouts, try lowering it to 65. The settings in control panel/system/display devices don't seem to affect this either I noticed that there's a grayed out checkbox in the Settings section of control panel/display: "extend my windows desktop onto this monitor." Would this be relevant? Most likely not if the card supports dual monitors and only one is connected. It's an Eizo, FlexScan, FX C6, recommended resolution is 1280x1024, way higher than I've set it to. That eliminates that as the prob. Thanks. I find this probelm more annoying than anything else. I can do it by clicking the display icon (which I put on my desktop), but I shouldn't have to. I don't know if it will work the way you wish, but try adding the display icon you mention to the Startup folder. This will definitely add it to the systray because it is then set to run on boot. One other possibility is that I use a Wacom tablet instead of an ordinary mouse which is mapped to the display. It is mapped to the "entire display" so I don't think this should be a problem. I'll check with Wacom and see if they have anything on this and will advise if they do. I can't comment on Wacom since I know nothing of it. -- Brian A.
