Default Fatal Exception 0D

Does anyone know how I can correct this problem: When I
shut down my computer from the START tab this blue screen
shows up with this message; Windows A fatal exception 0D
has occurred at 0317:00009D3E. Then I press the Ctrl +Alt
+Del and nothing happens. When I press any other key
{Enter} the screen goes to black with a line on top. I
then have to shut down by a hard boot (unplug power) which
I know is not good for my computer. Please if anyone knows
how to correct problem let me know. I own a HP Pavilion
that is running Windows 98.

I have been having the exact same problem. After being infuriated with it, I was finally able to find what I think is the solution. Click START; RUN; type msconfig; then click OK. The System Configuration Utility will open. On the GENERAL tab click ADVANCED; on the Advanced Troubleshooting Settings tab click to put a check in the box next to Disable Fast Shutdown. Click OK and then OK again. This immediately cleared the problem for me. I restarted several times and everything ran smoothly without that infuriating blue screened error. Hope it works for you too.
