Default LPT1 port is not talking!!

All,
I broke my last box about a year ago and the "new" one (P2, 350 MHz) got
the old printer (BJC-2000SP) connected to it, but was never used. When we
tried, I can't even get a test pager as the LPT1 port is "being used by
another program". What a load.
When started in safe mode the problem is that the board just won't talk to
the LPT1 port. The CMOS is up and running fine, the parallel port is there
at the right address. Not happy Jan!!!
