Default joystick/driver problem

A couple weeks ago I had a serious IE hyjack problem and
let Dell talk me into re-installing Win98. That didn't
solve the hyjack problem, and ever since I've had joystick
problems. When ever I restart windows the joystick is not
recognized. I will reload the driver (Turtle Beach
Montego), by first deleting the driver via the Device
Manager, and the joystick will work fine. But as soon as
I restart the computer the Joystick is not recogognized
until I again reload the driver. Spent 2 hrs on the phone
with Dell but they gave up on me. Any help appreciated.

Check whether you have a "ghost" driver in Safe Mode...

(a) Boot to Safe Mode. (Enable Startup Menu at "START, Run, MSConfig,
Advanced button, or hold F5 or CTRL as you boot.)
(b) "Control Panel, System, Device Manager tab".
(c) Open the "Sound, video & game controllers" branch, & delete all Game
Controllers under it. This is meant to eliminate "ghosts" of drivers
past, which are invisible in Normal Mode.
(d) Reboot to Normal Mode.
(e) Install your Game Controller, if it hasn't automatically been
detected.

NOTE: You may be required to insert your Installation CD, if you remove
something that Windows cannot otherwise find. Also, it is possible to
remove something on Device Manager Windows will NEVER find, if it is
proprietary to your manufacturer.

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
