Open With uses wrong application
My Windows ME Compaq computer came with a Microsoft Word 2000 CD that I
never used. Thus, Word 2000 was never installed. I did install Microsoft Word for Windows 97 and changed the file association for .doc files so that if I left click on a .doc file it opens with Word 97. If I right click on a .doc file (or certain other file types) and select Open With, one of the choices that pops up is Microsoft Word for Windows 97. The problem is if I select Word 97 the file does not open but instead up pops a window that says "Preparing to install..." and then another window that says "The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'Microsoft Word 2000' disk and click OK". At the very bottom of that second window is "Use feature from:", with the only choice being Microsoft Word 2000 or else Browse. How can I make the Open With selection of Word 97 actually use Word 97 to open the file? Tom |

MrTom asked :-
How can I make the Open With selection of Word 97 actually use Word 97 to open the file? Re-associate it using the option in Windows Explorer | Tools \ Folder Options \ File Types. Look for the .DOC extension and either confirm the 'Registered file type' and/or change it to your required application. Mart "MrTom" wrote in message . .. I tried what you suggested--I deleted the file type DOC, recreated it,
associated it with Word 97 and had the same problem as described in the original post with Open With. In addition, left clicking on the .DOC file name no longer opened the file, but instead, also went down the "Preparing to install..." path. Somehow after thrashing around I fixed the left click open problem, but the original Open With difficulty still remains. Any more suggestions? OEM's sometimes pre-install certain applications and utilities which fully
install on 'first run'. You may need to confirm that Word 2000 hasn't been partially pre-installed by Compaq - check for it being listed in Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel - or even in some sort of installation setup utility provided by Compaq. Also try removing and re-installing Word 97 to try to overwrite any 'bad' registry entries. On a personal note, I found Word 2000 a better program than Word 97, but that's your choice of course. Agree with your assessment of 2K. But how compatible is Word 2K with office
97? Maybe the association he has to get rid of is not with word, but with the compaq stuff? A shot in the dark, but perhaps clearing the recent folder, archiving SendTo & ShellNew and then attempting again will give a hint? Could that be weirder than Compaq? Yes, I do have Office 97. That is a reason I had not installed Word
2000, especially since Word 97 works fine for me. Word 2000 is not listed in Add/Remove programs. Compaq obviously put something about Word 2000 into the system. I see under the File Types that the default association for both DOCH... Microsoft Word HTML Document and for DOTH... Microsoft Word HTML Template is Microsoft Word 2000. Also, using regedit I found six instances of "Microsoft 2000". I'm no registry expert, so I would be leery about using regedit to change anything in the registry. Hopefully Mart can answer compatibility issues.
But, I install Office 97 before Office 2k. I have some templates I can only get access to that way and a bunch of them are from a program that will only install them to Office 97. The only issue I've had is that running a registry checker I found a ton of references to help files for 97 that no longer exist. It has not caused any problems and some day may remove them just to keep registry a bit more compact. Just to stop the nusance, I would be tempted to try it. Just backup, set restore, and all those other precautions. I would also wonder how the office update site would function? Norman "MrTom" wrote in message ... Yes, I do have Office 97. Tom, my *guess* is that a 'first run' - or at least the first (or\and
subsequent) aborted run(s) - of Word 2000 may well have started to put 'stuff' into the registry probably which wouldn't have been erased on cancelling the install process. I suspect that his *may* be causing you these apparent conflict issues. Two options - to allow Word 2000 to continue installation until completion, and then uninstall it in Add\Remove programs - hopefully removing all stray registry entries, leaving it clean again for Word 97. Not forgetting to set an SR point before you start! Or, install Word 2000 and use it! - Thus updating/overwriting the Word 97 component of Office 97 which as far as I am aware would not affect the other components of Office 97. You never know, you may prefer it - and if you don't, you can always remove it. (Hence the suggestion to set SR points). OT - Wow! - just noticed that the Daylight Saving Time here in the UK updated my XP box without any fuss Mart "MrTom" wrote in message ... Yes, I do have Office 97.
