Default WIN98 Hang

Help. I have an older Compaq ProSignia 150 running WIN98.
For no apparent reason, it just started hanging on
startup. I've probably made things worse by now, but have
dumped all caches, deleted temp files, temp. internet
files, run scan disk, defragged, and booted in safe mode
more times than I can possibly count, without success. I
still can't get it to boot normally. One MS article
suggested 3 boot options, none of which I can do because
in Selectivve startup, Process Config.sys file, Process
Autoexec.bat file and Process Winstart.bat file are all
disabled. I'm still looking for my original OS disk that
came with the PC or the restore, but would like to get it
running again. I also need to get all the files and data
off, too.

Try using "Step by Step confirmation".

When your computer is booting up hit the ESC key and it
will disply what is going on.

I tried that, too. No success.

I'll give this a try, but what exactly is it going to
tell me?

The idea behind "Step by Step confirmation" is to take note
of the last item processed before the hang up and try to use=20
that information to determine what is causing the problem.
