Default Unofficial Time Zones Update (Testers wanted)

I could have it search for previous BAK file(s) and rename them. Don't
*think* that's too hard to do with a BAT file. Or, I may turn it all into a
VB script. See how manic I am this week. Running out of time, s. Then
again, every reinstall....

One minor issue. I think that if someone runs the patch twice on the
same system they will wipe out there backup recovery file. So if
someone intends to run it twice for some reason then they should
rename the backup file. But maybe this is too obvious.

it
isn't installed by Automatic Updates or suggested by using Express option

OK, I've fixed it so there can be as many as a thousand backups. That enough
for you, g?

I screwed up! I applied the 2000 patch on a 98se box by accident.

Can I just double click on the registry bak file and undo the mistake?

I ran the 2000 bat file, but I did not do the extra steps to switch
the time zones back and forth,
so I guess the change is not applied, copied to that second area of
the registry.

All it did was add the info to HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows
NT\Time Zones. where it will do no good, but will also do no harm. Because
it did not exist before your ran the BAT file, no backup was created. Your
original info is still intact. Simply run the correct file.

You can delete the Time Zones key from the Windows NT key if you wish -- or
not. It's up to you.

As noted in my other reply, the info is useless to Win98, and harmless. Even
if you *did* change the TZ to something different and then back, it didn't
change anything. You simply have to use the correct file, then perform the
last steps.

Note: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=931836 corrects some errors in the
previous patches. I've nearly finished the updates to account for this and
to add some features, but I won't be done until late tonight or tomorrow AM,
Pacific time.

OK. Cquirke or Blanton would be great for the .bat. Also, someone else

| |
| | OK. That's good to know that any click on "apply" of that

Ah! Good! I hope that's their last update, though. So...

You will run this update on an XP machine, & then export the Registry
key? That's how you do it, maybe reverting some of the Registry values
too (such as "Eastern Standard Time" back to just "Eastern"? I guess
that does it, then. Very good.

| The only system I haven't tested yet is NT4. If anyone has one
they're
| willing to test it on, I'd sure appreciate it. Otherwise, it will be
| another several days before I can dig out my copy of that and load
it into
| a VPC.
|
| Might as well start at the beginning:

|
| Once I'm satisfied, I'll be broadcasting the news to all MS public
| newsgroups. Heck, I bet even most XP users don't know they need it,
and it
| isn't installed by Automatic Updates or suggested by using Express
option
| at Windows Updates. Only the Custom option. Seems real stupid to me,
but
| the logic MS uses to handle Updates often escapes me. Like making
IE7 a
| Recommended Update, but then having Automatic Updates install it.
Dumb,
| dumb, dumb!
|
| PLEASE!! If you're not reasonably adept at using Windows, backing up
| Registries, restoring same, etc., DON'T try these Unofficial Updates
until
| others have proven them out.
