Making the read-only attribute stick for Program Files
Hello
How do I make sure the read-only attribute stays set for my Program Files folder? I need this to stay set in order for the folder customizations to be displayed. Every time I try setting it (either through Windows Explorer or using the DOS Attrib command), when I reboot Windows I always find the read-only attribute has been removed. Why is this happening? Another customized folder, \Windows\System32, also has its read-only attribute set; it stays set even after Windows is rebooted, so why not the same for Program Files? |

I find that the Read-Only attribute takes care of itself. When I
customize Program Files, it automatically gets set. When I remove customization, Read-Only automatically is cleared. I'm thinking-- have you somehow gotten it out-of-synch? Then... Turn off Customization for Program Files. Also, uncheck the Read-Only attribute. Now, turn on Customization. Did the attribute get set? -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Daniel Lam" wrote in message ... | Hello | | How do I make sure the read-only attribute stays set for | my Program Files folder? Making the read-only attribute stick for Program Files
Hi PCR
Thanks for that, I'll give it a try. The Read-only attribute also keeps being removed for my 'My Documents' folder, although this folder isn't customized (it just has a custom icon). Why is this? Just out of interest - the Windows folder is also a customized folder; how come it can display customizations without either the Read-only or System attributes being set? One other thing - what attributes are set for your \Windows\System32 folder on Windows 98 (*not* NT/2000/XP)? Regards Daniel "PCR" wrote in message ... Making the read-only attribute stick for Program Files
Hi PCR
Your \Windows\System32 folder... does it display any customizations even though all the attributes are cleared? If so, how does it do this? Oh, I tried what you suggested with the Program Files folder (removing customization then re-applying it). The Read-only attribute *does* get set after this, only to be removed once again when Windows is rebooted! Regards Daniel "PCR" wrote in message ... That folder is all clear. So is My Documents & Windows... C:\attrib C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 SYSTEM32 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 C:\attrib C:\Mydocu~1 MYDOCU~1 C:\My Documents C:\Attrib E:\MYDOCU~1 MYDOCU~1 E:\My Documents C:\attrib C:\Windows WINDOWS C:\WINDOWS Well, I suppose My Documents & Program Files, by design, should NEVER be made Read-Only. Those folders are meant to be written to. Yet, I notice, when I Customize "C:\My Documents", it DOES get set to Read-Only. Could be, after a reboot, it would get set back. (I'll know tomorrow.) Now, that folder is a vestige, as I have a while ago moved to "E:\My Documents". And that one IS Customized. Also, it is NOT Read-Only. Can it be a reboot after Customizing it is what removed the Read-Only attribute? (I'll know tomorrow.) Here is an interesting article... http://support.microsoft.com/default...14&Product=w98 Unable to Remove Read-Only Attribute from Folder (256614) - You may be unable to remove the Read-Only attribute from a folder using Windows Explorer. In addition, some programs may display error messages when you try to save files to the folder. ...But I have never had to do that! -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR |

Making the read-only attribute stick for Program Files
Well, C:\My Documents HELD it's Read-Only attribute through a reboot.
Just now, I turned off Customization, & the attribute was removed. However, this is not my "system" My Documents, which I moved to E:\ a while ago. As I said, for some reason, E:\My Documents IS Customized, & it's Read-Only is NOT set. Fine, let me play with that one. This one is my "system" My Documents. Apparently, turning off/on Customization has NO EFFECT on it's Read-Only attribute, which remains off. Customization DOES hold across a boot. (I Customized it long ago.) Now, I have Customized both C:\Program Files\ & C:Windows\System32\, which DOES turn on their Read-Only attribute automatically. Will know later tonight whether a reboot turns off the Read-Only attribute. What is the purpose of all of this, Lam? -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Daniel Lam" wrote in message ... | Hi PCR | | Your \Windows\System32 folder... does it display any customizations | even though all the attributes are cleared? Making the read-only attribute stick for Program Files
Yikes! I couldn't open Explorer again using it's shortcut after that! (I
guess it was that.) In fact, eventually the machine crashed, & I could only shut down with a four-second power off. It did fully reboot, but shortcuts weren't working. "START button, Run, Explorer" did work, and it showed both Program Files\ & System32\ DID retain their Customization & Read-Only attributes. I couldn't open those folders directly, but had to open a sub-folder to them. Then, Explorer's UP button got to them. I turned off Customization, & their Read-Only attributes got turned off. After a reboot, all is well. Stop playing with that, Lam! Or perhaps switch to the System attribute, per that article I posted! -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "PCR" wrote in message ... | Well, C:\My Documents HELD it's Read-Only attribute through a reboot. | Just now, I turned off Customization, & the attribute was removed. | However, this is not my "system" My Documents, which I moved to E:\ a | while ago. | | As I said, for some reason, E:\My Documents IS Customized, & it's | Read-Only is NOT set.
