Default Cache

I have my IE browser cache set to a maximum 10 MB on both my 98SE
Desktop and Me Laptop, however the cache on the Me Laptop recently
grew to 17 MB, despite deleting it via the normal procedure (Internet
Options/General tab/TIF/ DELETE FILES (including offline content). I
subsequently reduced the overflow cache manually by
deleting the contents of the files within c:\windows\temporary
internet files.

Question. How does the computer allow the cache to grow beyond the set
maximum and more importantly what's the impact of exceeding the max
cache ??? For guidance, I found an immediate recovery from a
historical lethargic condition, however unpon rebooting, it returned
to its lethargic mode. I posted in the Win Me newsgroup but received
no response.

Thanks Haggis, I appreciate your rapid response. I had tried searching
the Microsoft knowledge base but came up empty. Certainly is
interesting. It's been about 5 days now and when I delete the cache,
there remains about 2.5 MB, whereas last week it was 17 MB.
Again, thanks for your feedback.

Thanks Glen, I'm not sure I want to download a utility to manage it
for me, now that I know how to fix it manually. However at least I
know this utility is available, if I should change my mind.

I can recommend CacheSentry wholeheartedly. Less critically necessary than it
once was, it nevertheless provides an unobtrusive and automatic way to prevent
some problems from ever occurring. If you do use it, I think you'll find that a
Startup or Scheduled launch of CacheSentry using the -i switch (which cleans up
the cache and then exits CacheSentry) is an ideal way to eliminate one more
irritant from your computing experience.

Hello Gary
Thanks for your input too. I didn't want to compound the sluggishness
of the %$#@ Laptop, however, if it's not as obtrusive as I thought,
there is no harm in trying it out.
Thanks again.

If you run it in the background on a continuous basis, it will definitely cause
occasional hiccups when running IE. Otherwise, it's no drain on resources, and
of course when you run it with the -i switch, you're lucky to notice it at all.

'morning Gary & Glen
Just a short note to say, I downloaded and ran CacheSentry. Despite
having just cleaned-up, it found items dating back years. I'll
definitely keep it; I'll try it in regular mode for a while and then
will run the -i switch and see the difference.
Thanks again to both of you for the recommendation.
