Ghost Button Resolution for Win98SE

If you are using Windows 98 SE and installed either the May 22, 2000
Critical Update
or the Windows 98 Second Edition Mapped Drives Shutdown Update or the
Windows 98 SE 1394 Storage Supplement you may experience ghost buttons on
the Taskbar.

The ghost buttons appear to be the result of interactions between existing
applications and
newer versions of user.exe and user32.dll installed by those updates.

If your system DOES NOT REQUIRE those updates, you can uninstall them by
searching your hard
drive for the associated uninstall inf file. Right click on the uninstall
inf file select
install and then reboot at the prompt.

May 22, 2000 Critical Update 260067un.inf
Windows 98 Second Edition Mapped Drives Shutdown Update 260067un.inf
Windows 98 Second Edition 1394 Storage Supplement 242975un.inf

If all goes well you should end up with user.exe and user32.dll version
4.10.2222.

This resolution and the file version numbers listed apply to Windows 98 SE.
Any added functionality provided by the newer versions of user.exe and
user32.dll will be lost.

Hi Scott,
If you copy and paste this into notepad (not wordpad), and
save it as a regfile on your desktop and merge it into the
registry, I can almost assure you that your problem will disappear.

I have also left a few tweaks in it to make your system a little
faster. If you choose to use it, you can save it or delete it
when you are done. There are no copy rights here...

The settings you are looking for, if you want to discard all
the rest, are these 3 settings:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"AutoEndTasks" = 1 = yes 0 = no. automatically stop the application.
"WaitToKillAppTimeout" = Application measured in miliseconds. Used when you
press
CTRL ALT DEL
"HungAppTimeout" = How fast to stop the application when it doesn't load
correctly.
"MenuShowDelay" = this is to set the speed or the menu. set to real time,
in miliseconds

###copy and paste below ### into a "filename.reg" ###
; Note: REGEDIT4 is only used in Windows 9x, and ME not XP.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"MenuShowDelay"="0"
"AutoEndTasks"="1"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="250"
"HungAppTimeout"="1000"

; This can help gain resources when you close applications.
; This tells Windows 98 Explorer to unload the .dll files that are
; not being used anymore.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer]
"AlwaysUnloadDLL"=dword:00000001

; This tells Explorer to tell the difference between double-clicks.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"UseDoubleClickTimer"="1"

; # END #

I'm not that familiar with using a reg file but I'll try since I know
how to restore a previous good registry.

Is this what I would put into notepad and save as filename.reg?

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"MenuShowDelay"="0"
"AutoEndTasks"="1"
"WaitToKillAppTimeout"="250"
"HungAppTimeout"="1000"

; This can help gain resources when you close applications.
; This tells Windows 98 Explorer to unload the .dll files that are
; not being used anymore.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer]
"AlwaysUnloadDLL"=dword:00000001

; This tells Explorer to tell the difference between double-clicks.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\Advanced]
"UseDoubleClickTimer"="1"

Anything after a ; is like a rem?

Spike01's Registry tweaks did not work for me, Haggis,-- not with
ScreenSavers, anyway. And I did a reboot before trying. (I've changed it
all back now.)

I think it's best to let those ghosts be. Just click them & they
disappear. They're more afraid of you than you are of them! I wouldn't
uninstall criticals over it, for instance. THAT will make them mad!

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,
