Default Display adapter

I have had my computer off for a few weeks and when I tried to get it up and
going I have a black screen that states " If you can see this, that means
that windows has successfully loaded this screen adapter" it then goes on to
say " if you would like this to be on your desktop you can add thru the
setting menu". Well, I can't get it off of this message, I can hear the
windows chime and the beeps to mean it is loading on, but I can't see it.
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME!!! I DON'T REALLY WANT TO DO A SYSTEM REBOOT, I DON'T
WANT TO LOSE ALL OF MY PICTURES!!!!
