Default StillImage Monitor and SSDPSRV--Unchecking these at Msconfig?

Hello:

I'm trying to increase system resources somewhat.

Can I uncheck these without losing functionality?.

I see the Still image Monitor [Stimon.exe] and the SSDSPRV.exe are xhecked
at the startup tab in Msconfig.

1) How can I ascertain whether these are essential programs to be running
at Startup?

2) If I uncheck these, are they automatically invoked when running a program
which needs those ?

3) If I uncheck these items and it turns out I later need them , will those
boxes still be there at the Startup tab in Msconfig so that I can check them
back in?

Can I uncheck these without losing functionality?

Thank you in advance:

-Eli

You can remove the uPnP software SSDSPRV.exe from being loaded but you should leave
STIMON.EXE alone.
But if you are using a uPnP complaint device such as a Cable/DSL Router, leave the uPnP
software alone as well.

Eli

Suggest you visit a site that will explain the value of programs in
the startup. Visit http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php and type
in the specific name in the SEARCH bar and it will provide the data
you require to make a decision. Example STIMON

quote Stimon.exe enables a USB still-image device (such as a
scanner) to initiate data transfer to a program. For example, if your
scanning device has a scan button, it may start a program and begin
scanning when you press it. Create a shortcut and start it manually
when needed if your scanner otherwise fails to scan. May be required
for your USB scanner to work - including all HP scanners and some of
their SCSI scanners unquote

Some programs are fairly easy to disable from the startup via
TOOLS/OPTIONS, however others are somewhat complicated because you
either have to uninstall them completely or go into the Registry and
disable them there. You may want to consider downloading a neat little
free utility that will facilitate the closing of these programs in
your startup for you. You can get Startup Control Panel 2.8 by Mike
Lin at; www.mlin.net .

Hope this helps.

Thanks David:

I use Dialup as of now. But if I should go on cable and need that uPnP
complaint device at some time in the future, will that program still be
available by rechecking the unchecked box in the Msconfig Startup panel?

[I really don't know what universal Plug and Play is....]

-Thanks again:

Universal Plug and Play

Description of Universal Plug and Play Features in Windows Me
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q262/4/58.ASP

How to Enable the Universal Plug and Play Feature
in Windows Millennium Edition
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q276/5/07.ASP
---------

ssdpsrv.exe is part of Me's Universal Plug n Play - this component provides
SSDP
and GENA services. Where SSDP = Simple Service Discovery Protocol and GENA
=
General Event Notification Architecture. Something you almost certainly
don't
require unless you are controlling your VCR, washing machine or coffee maker
from your PC. Rather than unchecking this entry in MSConfig I would
recommend
that you consider uninstalling Universal PnP using Add/Remove Programs |
Windows
Setup | Communications | Details and uncheck U PnP and then Apply. That is,
of
course, unless you are one of those rare people with a VCR that can be
controlled from their PC, or a coffee maker, fridge or washing machine. g
Some more details can be found at MS KB Q262458 - "Description of Universal
Plug
and Play Features in Windows Me"
