Slow Windows Explorer
I have just installed an app on a friend's Win98 laptop.
Whilst apps seem to run normally on the machine, the Windows Explorer is incredibly slow, taking up to a minute to become active again after changing a desktop icon name, or lining up the icons or similar minor actions. Does anyone know the reason for this? And can anything be done about it ? There are 54 desktop icons, might that have anything to do with it ? Jim Hawkins .. |

Have you tried uninstalling the app to see if it fixes it? I dunno about the
Desktop. Might try stuffing a bunch of them into a folder or ten and see if it helps. -- Gary S. Terhune MS-MVP Shell/User www.grystmill.com "Jim Hawkins" wrote in message ... Slow Windows Explorer
Thanks Gary.
It was like it before I installed the app. I tried defragging (it sure needed it - it took over 2 hours) even though the HD is only half full.. That helped a bit, but WE still freezes immediately after completing a task, and it takes up to a minute before HD activity ceases and WE unfreezes and becomes responsive again. I'll tell the owner your suggestion about the desktop, but I don't want to mess with it myslf. Jim Hawkins "Gary S. Terhune" none wrote in message ... There are issues with WE doing similar things, but usually I recall it being
due to too many folders in My Documents, for instance. It could be the number of icons on the Desktop, which is why I suggested storing them in various sub-folders, just to see if it helps. Otherwise, post to the Win98 General Discussion group. That's where all us oldies mostly hang out. Someone there might have your answer. -- Gary S.
