Default Internet access problems

Does anybody know why some of my programs can access the Internet and
others cannot? My Microsoft browser and Outlook Express can access the
Internet, as can WS_FTP95 FTP, and Sam Spade. But, Mozilla Thunderbird,
MailExpert, Avant browser, Free Download Manager, and several other
programs cannot access the Internet. I uninstalled Dial Up Networking,
erased the Socks2 registry key, then installed Dial Up Networking again.
That's why IE6 works now. I have a Compaq Presario with 128mb, 750 mhz,
26 gigs and Windows ME. And, is this problem common? My Sygate firewall
allows all these programs to access the Internet.

First step: Safe mode and un-install the firewall.

Enjoy,

I uninstalled my Sygate firewall and started my Zone Alarm firewall and now
I can access the internet with other than browser programs.
Thanks!
