I have Win98 installed on a dual boot (with Win XP) partition which
I use for running old software - mostly games. Each time I boot
into Win98 I keep getting the Found New Hardware messages relating
to USB devices. As I will never print, view CF card data, or
back-up to an external HD, from this partition, is there any way I
can disable the message/s please? None of these devices have ever
been installed on Win 98 and I wonder if I would be able to find any
Win 98 drivers for them, anyway. I have searched on-line for
Win98-specific information, but without finding anything helpful.

Many thanks
Kate

Rather than 'click off' the installer
simply let it run to completion...
even if you do not have the drivers it's looking for...
just let it complete the process.

If you do not have the drivers it's looking for there is typically a
prompt
not to see the message again

I think the reason why the hardware is found when I boot the Win98
partition is because it is a dual boot and the USB devices are
installed and working in my WinXP partition with XP drivers. I do not
have Win98 drivers for them, nor do I want them.

However, I have now run each installation sequence to finish. Two drivers
were found so I let them install, and the others all have yellow
questionmarks by them in Device Manager, but that`s OK as I don`t get
pestered to install them any more. Thanks for the suggestion.

Kate

I used to get very annoyed by this, and that was a long time
ago, but I believe either starting the install process and then
canceling it (the stupid OS will ask "do you want to cancel
install" or something like that) OR setting the BIOS to non-PnP
will get rid of this annoyance. PnP was a very bad idea anyway,
and all the techs I know referred to is as PlugandP/r/ay.

You may find it useful to select "Disable in this hardware profile" for the
devices that did not install properly, as this prevents future attempts to
re-install them if the OS detects they aren't working properly, for instance
when it enumerates all devices.
