Default Office 97 on Windows 98 compatability with Office 2007 on Windows

Could anyone advise is it possible to transfer the following Office 97 docs
on an old computer running Win 98 to a new computer with Office 2007 running
on Windows 7 -
1. Word 97, Excel 97 & Powerpoint 97
2. Outlook Express (v.6) e-mails & e-mail addresses

Any advice appreciated ( by a dinosaur)

Word 2007, Excel 2007 and PowerPoint 97 all have an option to save files in
97-2003 format, so it would be a pretty good guess that they can read files
in that form. That it is running on Windows 7 should not make a difference.

For OE you should ask in an OE newsgroup, as there are some very specific
requirements relating to exporting and importing messages and address books,
and a number of other options if the files aren't compatible..

How you actually get the files across might be interesting - the new
computer may not have serial or parallel ports or a floppy drive, and
the old one may not have an ethernet port or drivers for USB sticks. But
assuming you are asking whether they will be _readable_:

1. Word 97, Excel 97 & Powerpoint 97

Most versions of the Office suite can read files produced by earlier
versions; I haven't yet played with Office 2007, but certainly 2003
could. I'd be quite surprised if the old files couldn't be read.

2. Outlook Express (v.6) e-mails & e-mail addresses

See Jeff Richards' reply. I don't know what mail prog. W7 comes with (I
think it's "Windows Mail"), or how compatible they are. For the address
book aspect, from reading discussions of exchanging such with other
software such as Thunderbird, Eudora, Pegasus, and Turnpike, you may
have to use one of the other formats, such as CSV (comma-separated
variables); I've seen some people say that once in that form, you can
manipulate them in Excel, too.

As for the emails, if the old PC still has the facility and there aren't
a huge number (or volume) of them, the easiest way might be just to send
them to yourself as an email, with them all as attachments! Actually,
the same might apply to the Office files; put them into a .zip file (or
files) first if you want to preserve their creation dates.

Any advice appreciated ( by a dinosaur)
