Default Device manager yellow ? mark..help please

Toshiba laoptop
Win98se

I have yellow ? mark in my Device manager and the name of "Other devices" by
the L/H side, I think because I could not find the driver for something I do
not know what it is I am search for.!!

On bootup I have a box telling me "new hardware found", which says it is a
PCI card...unable to find drivers of the PCI card as I do not understand
what it is meaning at present. What will the PCI card be please, so I may
find a driver for same, but all appears to work.!

TIA

It's probably a PC Card. The full name is PCMCIA, and it's a card that
slides into a slot on one side or the other of the Toshiba.

To remove it, there is a little folding pushbutton right beside the slot on
Toshiba laptops. Unfold the button so it sticks out, then push it, and the
PC card will slide partway out. Grasp it , pull it all the way out, then
examine it to see what it is.

PC cards (PCMCIA cards) are about 1/8 inch thick, 2-1/8 inches wide, usually
3-1/2 inches deep.

On some Toshiba laptops there is a little plastic cover that hides the
PCMCIA card slot, and you'll have to open the cover with your fingernail.
Other Toshibas have no cover on the slot.

The program at http://www.halfdone.com/Development/UnknownDevices/ may help.

For starters, laptops don't have PCI cards... :-)
I've solved a few "Other device" problems by going to the manufacturer's
sites and searching for "other device". Did you happen to do a clean
reinstall of Windows? Sometimes those "Other Devices" can be connected with
special keyboard keys that require special drivers. Just a thought.

Yes I did a clean winows re-install on this laptop and on the early option
configuration I chose PORTABLE, as that is what I was installing on.
Now how do I remove this "other devices" entry in Device manager please, or
just leave it, which I don't really want to do as I read in this N/G about
these ??? may cause minor problems if not "put to bed".
Thank you
Terry

Carl..thanks for the reply.
1) Definately states PCI card against the "other devices".
2) No PC card/s installed.

Hi,

An on-board(built into the motherboard)device such as audio may be the
mystery device.

http://search.support.microsoft.com/...dv=1&spid=1139 MSKB
Search "Other Device PCI"; Windows 98; Weighted; Full Text; All Words;
Anytime; produced many. I hope this is the one...

• PCI Modem Does Not Work After Installing Windows 98
(221839) - After you install Windows 98, your Peripheral Component
Interconnect (PCI) modem may not be recognized. When this occurs, the
PCI modem may be listed as a PCI Serial Controller under Other Devices
in Device Manager. NOTE: To more effectively...

Thanks or Good Luck,
There may be humor in this post, and,
Naturally, you will not sue,
should things get worse after this,

What model Toshiba? I have drivers for a couple different models, and others
can be downloaded from www.toshiba.com but are hard to find on the web site.

Could be the built-in modem, audio, LAAN adapter, lots of things.

Terry,

You may identify the device by running Msinfo32 from Start Run.
Open Components then select Problem Devices.
Also try entering hwinfo /ui. Problems are in red. Under View
select Devices with Problems. That's the Hardware Info Utility with
User Interface.

It may be something you don't use or have setup, like a network card
etc.

Bill Watt
