Default Installing Win 98 on laptop

My son's laptop has been acting up, so we decided to fdisk
and format the harddrive. All went well; however, his
Gateway Solo has an interchangeable 1.44 disk drive and a
CD-ROM. When I inserted the Startup disk, I chose option
1 - start computer with CD-Rom support. The computer
couldn't find the CD-Rom because the 1.44 disk was running
at the time. I rebooted and tried to switch them out, but
it indicated several errors.
How can I install Windows 98 (on a CD) on a laptop with
only 1 drive? I even tried to copy all the files off the
startup disk to the C: and boot up from there. It seemed
to work, but then indicated a read error on Drive A: and
requested a Retry, Abort or Fail selection. Any help
would be greatly appreciated.

Boot to the startup floppy. Do FDISK to create your
partitioning (if necessary), FORMAT C: to format the disk
and SYS C: if you don't use the /S option with FORMAT.
Copy the whole of the contents of the floppy to the hard
disk drive. Edit the BAT file(s) on the hard drive (EDIT)
so that any references to A: are changed to C:. Shut down,
remove the floppy, insert the CD. Reboot to the hard drive
and install Windows from the CD. Rename AUTOEXEC.BAT and
CONFIG.SYS after the instal is finished (otherwise you
will be forever booting in installation mode).

Thanks for the help. I did in fact use FDISK and Format
C: /S. Please refresh my memory - do you use the
command "edit" and then the filename *.bat (for instance)
to open the edit file? When renaming Autoexec.bat and
Config.sys, do I use Windows Explorer? Also, should I
rename them Autoexecold.bat and configold.sys or something
else?

Thanks again.

From a C:\ prompt:
EDIT autoexec.bat and press Enter.
EDIT config.sys and press Enter.

After installation is complete, you can rename in Windows Explorer, or from
DOS....doesn't matter.
I usually rename to autoexec.ba_ and config.sy_

From DOS it would be:
REN c:\autoexec.bat autoexec.ba_
REN c:\config.sys config.sy_

I copied the Windows 98 Startup disk to C:. When it
rebooted, it tried to find the A:. I tried to EDIT the
*.bat files as indicated below, but the computer indicated
it was a Bad Command. Do I need another file such as a
DOS file?

You need EDIT.COM, usually found in the C:\Windows\Command folder on any Win9x
machine....copy it to your floppy and from there to your laptop hard drive.

If you have the Gateway W98 disk, it should be bootable and you can probably
install the system from it. Make sure the CDRom drive is set to the first
boot device in the BIOS.
