HELP! Computer is starting up at Win 98 Setup
My desktop computer screen on startup appears to startup
normally only to end up at a Windows 98 Setup screen each time. How do I get out of this? In safe mode this screen does not appear but I need to run in normal mode in order to use my CD-Rom drive. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Todd |

Look in the Startup Group for mention of "Setup.exe", & uncheck it...
Can you boot to Safe Mode? Hold F5 as you boot, or hold CTRL for the Startup Menu, & select Safe Mode from that. If you can get there, then... "START, Run, MSConfig" & turn off the Startup Group, Config.sys & Autoexec.bat. (Note: when you later turn them back on, all items in them will get checked. So, note what may be unchecked first.) Can you boot to Normal Mode now? If so, there is some troubleshooting to do, using MSConfig... http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;281965 How to Troubleshoot Using the Msconfig Utility with Windows 98 (281965) - This article describes how to use the Microsoft System Configuration (Msconfig) utility to troubleshoot configuration errors in Windows 98 and Windows 98 Second Edition. BUT BE CAREFUL-- better not disable System.ini & Win.ini, because that can be trouble. Well, if you are sure of your Registry backups, actually those two can be recovered this way... (a) Boot to DOS. (Hold Ctrl for the Startup Menu, & select "Command Prompt Only".) (b) Scanreg /Restore (c) Ctrl-Alt Del to Windows. It will offer five dates. Choose the one of the last successful boot, to start. These backups are done at boot, not at shut down. This should be safe to do, if you haven't done anything to files in the mean time. This will not restore files other than those .ini's & the Registry. It only restores settings. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "Todd" wrote in message ... | My desktop computer screen on startup appears to startup | normally only to end up at a Windows 98 Setup screen each | time. The computer is still stuck at Windows 98 Setup and
starts setting up Windows 98 again even after doing all the steps you suggested. I can hit CTRL-ALT-DEL to get out of it but it comes up again every time I start my computer. As before, it does not come up in safe mode but in safe mode, I do not have the use of my CD-Rom drive. Any other ideas? HELP! Thanks. I am not trying to reinstall Windows 98 even though my
computer tries to reinstall it each time I turn on the computer. Per your (2) below, here is a copy of my Startup Group after following your previous instructions: Microsoft Office Startup Group "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE" -b -l HP Digital Imaging Monitor Startup Group C:\Windows\Options\CABS\Setup.EXE Thanks for any help you can provide. Here it is...
| HP Digital Imaging Monitor Startup Group | C:\Windows\Options\CABS\Setup.EXE THAT is THE folder that holds THE "Setup.exe" that installs Windows! I can't think how HP got hold of it. Uncheck that item in MSConfig, and it will stop. May as well also... MSConfig keeps it in Startup, just in case you want to check it again. It has not been loaded to run, as Ctrl-Alt-Del shows. It has been moved to a Minus (-) Key in the Registry. To remove it from the Registry, you may navigate to the Key, and delete the entry under it. That will also remove it from MSConfig Startup, where you will no longer be able to check it. It's probably under one of these Keys: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunServices - ^... That minus sign wrapped away from "RunServices-". Also he "C:\WINDOWS\Start Menu\Programs\Disabled Startup Items" "START, Run, Win.ini". Delete any 'norun' entries under the [Windows] section. You would navigate to each key, by clicking the plus signs in the left pane. When you see "Run-", click it and look in the right pane, for what looks like the one your looking for. R-Clk it in the right pane and select "delete". However, first: "Registry menu, Export Registry File". This will create a .reg file of that Minus Key, which you may run (by clicking) to undo the delete you are about to do. All of that can more easily be done with http://www.pcmag.com/ ' RegEdit+, which has a customizable "Favorites" list, which includes those Minus Keys. It also has automatic "undo". Registry Detective is another worthy program freely downloadable there. StartupCop may really be what you need, also there. Watch out, keep the LoadPowerProfiles, and, I guess, any virus scanner duplicates. -- Thanks or Good Luck, There may be humor in this post, and, Naturally, you will not sue, should things get worse after this, PCR "todd" wrote in message ... | I am not trying to reinstall Windows 98 even though my | computer tries to reinstall it each time I turn on the | computer. | | Per your (2) below, here is a copy of my Startup Group | after following your previous instructions: | | Microsoft Office Startup Group "C:\Program | Files\Microsoft Office\Office\OSA9.EXE" -b -l | | HP Digital Imaging Monitor Startup Group | C:\Windows\Options\CABS\Setup.EXE | | Thanks for any help you can provide.
