MS Response Re Windows Security Update CD Cancellation
Received: from scf-imc-02.redmond.corp.microsoft.com (smtphost2.microsoft.com[131.107.3.117](misconfigured sender))
Hello and thank you for contacting us at Microsoft.com regarding Windows Security Update CD. The Security Update CD was designed to help customers with a dial up connection to the internet install important security updates for their Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows 98 and Windows ME PCs in less time than it would take to download them. However the CD only contains updates through October 15, 2003. As of August 6, 2004, the WSUCD is no longer be available to order online. Microsoft recommends our customers visit www.windowsupdate.com for the latest updates for Windows and that Windows XP users deploy Windows XP Service Pack 2 once it is available later this summer If you have other concerns, feel free to write us back. Sincerely, xxxxxxxxx Microsoft.com Customer Support |

MS Response Re Windows Security Update CD Cancellation
Their apparent "reason" is that it "only contains updates through October 15,
2003", and that this somehow makes it obsolete. Hogwash. For versions other than XP, dial-up customers *still* need a safe and sane way to update a clean reinstall (or even an over-install) without downloading *all* of the updates. What, because the user would still need to download a dozen or two MB, they shouldn't mind downloading another hundred or two? -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP for Win9x "Hugh Candlin" wrote in message ... MS Response Re Windows Security Update CD Cancellation
Agreed....hogwash! I for one am very unhappy with the decision to take down the CD.
I know a good many users who had not ordered it yet, and the download time is considerably shortened on dial-up, when doing a reinstall. I think it's time to write some letters/emails. -- Glen Ventura, MS MVP W95/98 Systems http://dts-l.org/goodpost.htm "Gary S. Terhune" wrote in message ... MS Response Re Windows Security Update CD Cancellation
Can't never tell Gary. I hounded MS for over a year about replacement
product keys and replacement W98 CDs and while I don't know how much (if at all) my efforts were responsible, replacement keys and retail versions of replacement CDs are now available. There was even a session on the subject at the last summit given by the person that I bugged the hell out of G. I am of the opinion that since I cannot be fired or told to shut up (I guess I could be told but I am hard of hearing), I ought to do what I can to make things better. So, I write G. Non-MVPs can use this URL to make their feelings known: http://register.microsoft.com/contactus/contactus.asp I have been assured that all input is read. Remember, Black Thursday (elimination of the MVP program a few years ago) was completely reversed by the huge outcry of concerned customers during a three-day period. Hmmmm, maybe a disk availability reversal is..... -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Gary S. MS Response Re Windows Security Update CD Cancellation
I still have clients who can't get better than 21600 bps. Hell, there wasn't
*any* broadband in this entire area other than satellite (yuck!) until the beginning of this year. Now, the relatively few people who live in town can get DSL, and others who live in the major valleys can get Digital Path, but that still leaves a large portion of the county residents on dial-up, probably for a long time to come. (Well, there *is* a new satellite system coming online called Wild Blue, but we'll have to see how that one goes.) And I'm talking about California, USA. Can't imagine what it's like for people in other countries who don't have the essentially free telephone systems we have here (under $20/mo. for unlimited local service, and I can't imagine that *anyone* has to dial long-distance for ISP service.) (Just to round out the subject, I should mention that there's probably never going to be a quality, modern cable TV/ISP service here, due to satellite TV being so entrenched.) -- Gary S. Terhune MS MVP for Win9x "Brian Gaff" wrote in message ... More likely they now think everyone has a broadband connection. it has certainly expanded, but I still have not botherd, and a lot of rural customers cannot even have the choice.
