Default Modem Ports problem

I keep getting an error code from my ISP stating that "The
communication port is already open." In following their
instructions I find that the port for my modem is COM2-
yet my communications port is COM1. How do I get them on
the same port?

Why do you think that comes from your ISP rather than your system?

Where did you see that ?

yet my communications port is COM1.

Where are you seeing that ?

How do I get them on
the same port?

(What happens is , I loose my connection, my dial-up
window opens along with an ISP window stating the below
statement, along with the following instructions:
1."Click here to open the Systems Properties window, and
click on the Device Manager tab."
2."Click on the "View devices by type" radio button."
3. "Double-click on the Modem branch to expand it, and
double-click the entry corresponding to your modem to view
it's properties."
4. "Select the modem tab, and note the communications port
currently configured for the modem. Click cancel to exit
the Modem properties window."
5. "Double-click the Ports (COM & LPT)branch to expand it,
and double -click the serial communication port entry
corresponding to the one you found in the previous step."
6. "In the newly opened Communicatioms Port properties
window, select the Resources tab and verify that the
resource settings match those configured for the modem.
For information about how to determine which resources the
modem should be configured to use, consult the
documentation included with the modem, or contact the
modem's manufacturer."

*These are real wordy instructions, and it is my hope that
someone here can give me a "Quick-fix."
