windows 98 logon password problem
When first booted up, my network logon password is found
to be incorrect and I receive an error message. If I reboot at this error message, the same password serves fine and is accepted second time around. Have not replaced password with new word yet over concerns that system files may find new word unacceptable, and old password also. Any suggestions? TIA Dixon |

Should the password be resolved by a domain controller? Then maybe the networkcard is the problem. What is the error message? |

windows 98 logon password problem
Is your machine on a network? If yes, are you talking about the network
logon or the windows logon that pops up in the boot process? Are you the sole user or are other user profiles established? -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Dixon" wrote in message ... The logon is a network logon ie ( logon & password )and the only logon during the boot process. First time around, message says password is not valid. When I try the second time and from that time forward during the day, the same logon is accepted. I am the sole user of the machine. Thanks for your reply |

windows 98 logon password problem
What I suggest is that you do away with the password window by establishing
a blank password and see if that cures it. Blank Password: Go to control panel, network, primary network logon and select Windows Logon. Go to control panel, passwords, user profiles and ensure the "all user's" box is marked. If you have a password established, go to control panel, passwords, change windows password, type the password in the old box, leave the rest blank and OK your way out. If you have forgotten your password, delete the .pwl file with your user name (mine is ron.pwl); however, be aware that you will lose all passwords stored in the ..pwl file. If you do not have a password established or have deleted the ..pwl file, when the W95/98 logon screen appears at boot, type a user name only and hit OK. If the logon screen continues to appear and you have Tweak UI installed, go to the Paranoia tab and remove the mark from "clear last user." -- Regards Ron Badour, MS MVP for W98 Tips: http://home.satx.rr.com/badour Knowledge Base Info: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=kbinfo "Dixon" wrote in message ... -----Original Message----- Is your machine on a network? windows 98 logon password problem
My error - password is the windows password and not the
network password. In any event, I began just hitting return at the windows password prompt and that has eliminated the subsequent problem of having to reboot. windows 98 logon password problem
Once you hit return and complete booting, do a find on: *.pwl and delete
the one with your user name (mine is ron.pwl). Reboot and when the logon box appears, enter the same user name and a new password. If you do not want to logon at each boot, enter a blank password. Blank Password: Go to control panel, network, primary network logon and select Windows Logon. Go to control panel, passwords, user profiles and ensure the "all user's" box is marked.
