Windows ME Hangs Upon Start-Up
Hello,
I am hoping thatsome one could kindly please help. Upon start-up, I get to my wallpaper and then that is it. It just hangs there and you cannot see any icons not eeven my task bar or START. I will get a dialog box to close program "devldr16". But I cannot end task and close this program. Also when I re-start sometimes, I'll get this error" "stmgr has caused an error in SMGR.DLL. stmgr will now close." It is as though Windows ME just hangs because this "devldr16" cannot close. I cannot get into device manager or anything. All I see is those two different dialog boxes as described above, and my wallpaper. It seems to boot up just fine otherwise. I would greatly appreciate any help, since I go to school by distance education and need my pc working. It is a Dell Dimension 8100 desktop Pentium 4. Thank you so much for any help or clues. Sincerely, Nicolette |

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode (Ctrl or F8 keys at bootup)?
If you can get into Safe Mode, let it run until you finally reach the Help Console and halfway down the page, you will see the System Restore option. Run SR and roll-back to the last time/date that the pc worked OK. Mart "Nicolette" wrote in message ... Hello, I am hoping thatsome one could kindly please help. Thank you, Mart. I will try it this evening when I get
home and let you know. Yes, I have had it in safe mode, but as I recall it just freezes there as well. It is like I cannot do anything until I close that stinkin' "devldr16" program. I really do appreciate your response. Sincerely, Nicolette -----Original Message----- Have you tried booting into Safe Mode (Ctrl or F8 keys at bootup)? Nicolette, in the meantime I've been looking on the web for references to
devldr16 and it appears to be related to a 'troublesome' Creative Labs Soundcard utility. See:- http://www.answersthatwork.com/Taskl...tasklist_d.htm which probably gives the best 'authoritive' explanation and 'solution'. But if you do a google search for "devldr16", you will find plenty of 'user group' responses to this issue and you may just have to pick the best one to suite your machine. Sounds like your soundcard drivers/software aren't totally WinMe compatible - particularly for DOS applications - but that's no surprise g. Creative's highly respected reputation seemed to 'nosedive' with the introduction of WinMe. Good luck and I hope you are able to stabilise your PC without having to change your soundcard Mart "Nicolette" wrote in message ... Thank you, Mart.
