ME Installation
I am trying to install Windows ME on a new hard drive that was just
purchased. After partitioning and setting up the installation is stuck on the final step in the process called "Setting up Hardware and Finalizing Settings". The error that comes up is titled "Network" and says "You must provide computer and workgroup names that will identify this computer on the network" then there is a "OK" button. The problem is all my functions are frozen, my keyboard and mouse do not work on this screen so I can't move on. I have tried three different keyboards and mice to no avail. I am using a Microsoft installation CD that came with my Dell computer. I also have an XP upgrade CD and have tried using that but it doesn't do anything. I can reboot the computer but it always ends up back at the same place with no keyboard or mouse working so I can't complete the install. Any other suggestions? |

ME Installation
You appear to have a driver issue associated with a network device. (A LAN
card, modem or router?) Try re-booting into Safe Mode (by tapping at the F8 key or holding the Shift key during the boot process). Then look in Device Manager and see what errors (Yellow exclamation/question marks) are showing. Make a note of the device(s) - probably a network/modem/router card/device - and "Remove" it (using Dev.Man) Make sure you have the (network) device drivers to hand (supplied separately on a disk associated with the device?), then re-boot your PC and (hopefully) it will attempt to boot into Normal Mode and whilst doing so, should ask you for the (network) device drivers. Navigate to the drivers and WinMe installation *should* complete. If, after attempting the above, the PC still continues to hang, then you may have to physically remove the device identified in Dev.Man, from your PC, and then worry about drivers for that device later. Try to keep your hardware to an absolute (essential) minimum during the initial setting-up process. Good luck Mart "Derek" wrote in message ... ME Installation
Thanks for your help Mart. I have tried as you suggested and here's where I
am at on it. I can get into safe mode and into Dev.Man and remove the errors under the question marks but it does not solve the problem and when I reboot and enter safe mode again the following errors continue to reappear: PCI Card PCI System Management Bus PCI Universal Serial Bus I tried physically removing what looks to be a modem from the PCI card but it didn't change my results which is to always return to ME setup then get frozen out. I can't install any drivers because I can't do it in safe mode and my keyboard and mouse are frozen in the setup. For the same reason I can't install or reformat anything at all. Wondering if this is a hardware problem with my motherboard or a software problem with my drivers and if there are any other solutions that I could try. Thanks again. ME Installation
Hi Mike, although it has to be a driver issue, missing chipset drivers
hadn't occurred to me at the time of my initial reply. Let's hope Derek still has the original disks supplied with the PC - although I suspect that he may not - and can install all the correct drivers for his specific PC. But a good call, nonetheless. Mart "Mike M" wrote in message ... PCI System Management Bus PCI Universal Serial Bus For these two you need to install the chipset driver for the motherboard. Establish which motherboard your system has, either by opening the box or by reference to the system manufacturer's web site and then download and install the appropriate drivers if you don't have a CD containing them that came with the PC. PCI Card This could be anything. You can help narrow down by checking what's missing, starting with video, audio and network although each of those three is usually more specifically identified. Once you've established which card is missing and needs drivers, download the required drivers from the manufacturer's web site. -- Mike Maltby Derek wrote: Thanks for your help Mart. ME Installation
Mart,
Missing chipset drivers probably wouldn't have been the cause of the original problem. In truth with a clean install as Derek has said he has done, missing drivers shouldn't be a problem at all so what is causing the first error and lock up is anyone's guess. However since Derek now says he can get into Safe Mode everything should be OK once he had identified the missing drivers although, again, I don't understand why he is still apparently having problems booting to normal mode. He should be able to do this even though various drivers are missing. Perhaps the installation log file setuplog.txt in the root of C: that should have been created during the install will give some clue as to the cause of the problem. The last few lines should be sufficient. -- Mike M Mart wrote: Hi Mike, although it has to be a driver issue, missing chipset drivers hadn't occurred to me at the time of my initial reply.
