I'm forwarding this to WinME General newsgroup via cross-post so you can get the best advice, Mike. It doesn't sound like an OE problem.

Mike,
You mention having had problems (you don't mention what exactly) with System Restore and fixed them by installing a new copy of wininit.exe. Since personally I've never heard of that fixing any problems with System Restore (despite KB283069 Method 2 (b)) I'm a little surprised that this fixed anything. The almost universal cause of the %1 %2 error when booting Win Me (if that was the error you were seeing) is that the C:\_RESTORE\TEMP folder has reached the limit of the number of files that it can contain and the only solution to that is to blow away that folder together with its contents. One of the main causes of this problem being Symantec's LiveUpdate which together with most Symantec products is almost totally incompatible with running a stable Win Me system. Moving on to your problem. That you have seen the %1 %2 error tells me that you have tried to install one or more updates, probably from the Windows Update site, and that they will not have installed correctly since the last stage of the install would have aborted when you saw the %1 %2 error. All of these patches need to be reinstalled even if the Windows Update site indicates that they are fully present and correct. My suggestion at this point would be to download and use the Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) which will help you in identifying which patches may need to be reinstalled. If you find that any patches do need to be reinstalled these can be downloaded from the Windows Update Catalogue (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.co...n/default.asp). Select Win Me, critical updates and then select and download those you need. When you have done this post back and let us know which if any patches needed to be reinstalled and then either PABear or myself will try and take you forward from there. -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows PA Bear wrote: I'm forwarding this to WinME General newsgroup via cross-post so you can get the best advice, Mike. Thank you PA Bear and Mike M.
Thanks to your guidance I made a progress but I am not there 100% yet. ( You did not expect me to be): - My Restore is now fine and %1 %2 do not appear any more. Mike M was right about that method 2 did not fixed it copletely - I gathered my courage and used method 1. - Belarc told me that very few of the updates were installed. Those are things I would have never guessed. You are right that %1%2 has been here for a while and some programs did not install well. MDAC2.8 SP1 Installed without a glitch. Following this I downloaded KB 911562 from the Microsoft site. When I tried to install it, two messages came up: 1. "Error Staring program The MDAC 281-KB911562-X86-ENU.EXE file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtShutdownSystem" 2. Behind it with the red sign: "A device attached to the system is not functioning" Where do I go next? Mike A "Mike M" wrote in message ... Just a couple of points at this stage. MDAC. Download and install MDAC2.8 SP1 from http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...f/MDAC_TYP.EXE and then install the 911562 patch from Windows Update. Even if the 911562 patch has previously been installed it will need to be reinstalled once you have installed MDAC 2.8 SP1. SP1. There is no SP1 or any other service pack for Win Me however you should be running IE6 SP1, that is service pack 1 for IE6. IE 6 : Help-About shows Version 6.0.2800.1106 and Update versions : SP1 and six QXXXXXX updates. This tells me that IE6 SP1 is installed. I would expect a fully patched IE6 SP1 to possibly show a few more installed patches. My Win Me system here shows SP1, Q330994, Q828750, Q832894, Q867801, Q823353, Q889293, Q833989, Q887797, Q867282, Q891781, Q890923, Q883939, Q903235, Q896688, Q905915, Q912812, Q916281 and Q918439. These patches have however been installed over many years and I would expect you to see significantly fewer as many are cumulative so installing the latest cumulative hotfix for IE6 SP1 updates all of the files updated by earlier cumulative updates. - Windows Update site shows that I am still missing critical update Cumulative Security Update for Outlook Express 6 Service Pack 1 (KB837009). However it refuses to install it because it says that I do not have SP1. What does OE Help | About have to say? OE6 SP1 is v6.00.2800.1123. - Belarc told me that very few of the updates were installed. I went to the catalog and downloaded about 50 updates. This suggests to me that your %1 %2 error may have been around for some time. Hopefully this problem won't reoccur and if it does you now know how to deal with it. Once you have installed MDAC 2.8SP1 and (re)installed 911562 which patches does Belarc report as broken and which are being offered by the Windows Update site? -- Mike Maltby MS-MVP Windows MikeA wrote: Thank you PA Bear and Mike M. You appear to be trying to install a version of KB911562 designed for use on a system running XP rather than Win Me. Mike,
That's good to read and I see that PA Bear has posted what should be the fix for your 837009 problem although I suspect you had done that before making your post to me. Let's hope your program re-installs now go as smoothly.
