Default how to use start up disc created with 98 2nd edition update

Have 98 2nd edition update. Created a start up disc over
8 months ago when installed. Computer will not start on
its own and I have to open with safe mode.

How can I use the floppy that was created to get a normal
start????

The emergency startup floppy does not start Windows. You can use it to
start DOS, so that you can then investigate the cause of the problem. Simply
insert the floppy in the drive and start the machine. Depending on the
state of the hard disk drive you might need to access BIOS setup and set the
floppy disk drive to be first in the boot sequence.

Thanks Jeff - even though it is called an emergency start
up disc , it does not start it - ok. I Put it in and ran
a scandisk. No issues were noted. Is there a reference
somewhere on how to use the DOS for the investigation you
spoke of??

If the floppy is any where in the boot sequence the
system should boot to/from it if the primary has become
nonbootable. Maybe a dissabled floppy seek may prevent it.
But if it is in the boot sequence it should.

Have the PC off. Stick in the floppy and boot PC. If it
does not go through the system test or you don't get a
boot selection screen? Then check bios as Jeff said for
boot to floppy or A:.
Once it goes through it's tests and you get a A:\ curser.
Type "help" ,without the quotes, and hit enter.
Read the help files. Read them carefully and completly.
You will use the arrow keys to move the page up or down.
Do not do anything unless you understand it fully on what
it will do.
You will need to know where to do the work and when to
change from A:\ prompt to C:\ prompt.
To leave the boot disk...at the A:\ prompt type "restart"
without the quotes and hit enter. This will restart the
machine.
Once you read the help on the boot disk. You will
probably have allot more questions. But it is good to
learn how to use this tool.

How you investigate the problem depends on what is stopping Windows from
starting. What happens when you try to start Windows through the normal
process of booting to the hard drive?

OK. I am just guessing here. no expert and not much win 98
experience (win 98 P2 on small home network now, limited experience).
This is just a stab in the dark, but it is something you can do. At
least you'll know what is not the problem after you try this.

If you can start in safe mode, then do it. go to start\run & type in
msconfig. Go to where it says start-up. I am guessing in safe mode
it unchecked all of those boxes. But I am not sure. So you need to
try to boot normally with all boxes unchecked in the start-up there.
if you cannot boot normally with all boxes unchecked, then the
start-up stuff is not your problem. And that is all, Forget this
post.

But if you can boot normally with all boxes unchecked, then one of
those buggers is your problem, and you need to find out which one by
trial & error. Check some boxes & reboot. If you can boot with
those, put a check in some more of those boxes & reboot. etc etc.
until you figure out the bad one.

In MB bios. If it is an option to enable or disable it?
It would be on the page as boot sequence.
