Default Win 98 SE unregistered

I would like to bid on a Win98 SE upgrade on Ebay. However it states that
this is "unregistered". What does that mean? Will this have a key code that
allows me to install it?

If true, this means ownership of this particular disk was
never registered with MS. (But MS no longer registers
Win98 on line, if at all.) The disk should be accompanied
by a valid Product key.

You should be asking the seller about this sort of detail. The phrase
usually means that it has never been registered with Microsoft as installed
on a machine. It might have been opened and used, but not registered as
installed.

If that's the case, it doesn't mean anything. It's quite OK to sell retail
Microsoft operating systems, whether already registered or not, provided the
seller complies with the conditions of the End User Licence agreement.
Whether or not it has the installation key is a question only the seller
could answer.

I recently restored my computer from the recovery disk. The windows 98 had
been registered when I originally set up the computer years ago.

Problem is, I was looking for an updated driver from windows update (new
hardware found...specify location for driver) and system is telling me that
registration is required to access the drivers list.

Is Windows update for 98 still able to provide drivers? is there a way to
bypass the registratioon process since MS no longer supports 98
registration? I have the old hard drive still if there is a way to recover
the original registration info?

TIA,
Oppie

You should not be getting your drivers from Windows update - the drivers
available for W98 are not suitable. Go to the hardware manufacturer's www
site to download your W98 drivers.

Thanks Jeff,
I had received a gift of a USB memory stick. It worked fine in an XP
machine at work but with 98, it needs a driver. I have a windows 98 machine
at work that can still get driver updates from MS. It was unable to find a
drive for the memory stick anyway. The device is a generic with no logo or
any recognizable information to direct me to a manufacturer's website.
Probably easier to just get a new data traveller from Kingston that supports
98.

Would you know also, if a 98SE install for PC without windows can be made to
work as a 98 to 98SE upgrade? Tried to load it and it informed me that the
CD could not be used with my current operating system and to get an upgrade
CD.

My machine came with a restore disk that included 98 but was installed with
98SE. Been trying to figure how I can get 98SE again after a disk crash and
replacement. I only recently got the 98SE disk for pc without windows or I
would have used that for the new HDD. Nothing is easy...

You might get a handle on the manufacturer of the memory stick by
investigating it in detail when plugged into the XP machine. Otherwise, it
would be trial and error to find a W98 driver for it, and there might not
even be one.

The W98SE retail full and retail upgrade can both be used to upgrade an
existing W98 system. A W98SE OEM CD might be usable as an upgrade - see
