Default System clock running way slow

In the past, the clock in my Windows 98 ran slightly fast. Lately, it's
running extremely slow--by as much as 15 minutes per day. What does
this indicate about my system?

If the slowdown is while the system is switched on - then you are probably
running a CPU-intensive program now rather than earlier .
If you haven't made any system changes, perhaps you should check for
malware....
You may already have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.
http://www.merijn.org/cwschronicles.html

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.trendmicro.com/cwshredder/

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

post back with your results

OTOH, if the clock is losing time only when the machine is powered down,
suspect the CMOS battery - and have it changed (or change it yourself)

The clock is running slow while the system is running.

I'll do a virus scan and an AdAware scan. I don't have CW shredder so
I'll have to get that.

Do you feel that a clock slowdown like this is due to software issues
rather than a mechnical problem with the computer itself?

Thanks,

The clock is not mechanical - so it almost has to be software-related!g.

Good. I thought maybe it was a sign that something of an electronic
nature was fading out in the computer itself.

Some programs, games and screensavers use a timing routine that will
affect the system clock. Try the blank screen for a screensaver for
awhile. Also a Norton AV feature that loads at boot may affect the
clock.

When you boot up is the clock correct each time or does the loss
accumulate?

When you boot go to the Command Prompt and enter TIME. Check that
after a fairly long session.
