Default Monitor Dell

I just Reconfiged my HD with Windows 98, but now I cant get my monitor to
work properly.

I can't change the screen size. I cant grab the sider to change it on the
display panel. The screen size is set at 630x480 yuck.... It reminds me of
Windows 3.1. Also the Colour. The only choices I have are 2-colour bit ! lol
and 16-colour. Which of course it shud be at 32-Colour. We tried looking at
the monitor CD but there is nothing to set up and it says its reading the
Dell Monitor but we tried looking for the upgrade but it won't recongzie it.
The upgrade meaning, I think its not reading the Graphic Card. I think it
needs like the FX or something???

Oh yes one other thing worth mentioning is. We used my friends Windows 98
disc with the correct serial # and everything. We didnt use mine as we werent
sure if mine was the correct one. even thou I think it was. as it was called
REINSTALL WIN98 for Del Computers and his was the Logo'd Windows 98 for PC
without Windows. Would that have made a difference you think to this monitor
issue?

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help me

Lisa it sounds like you have a driver problem. Did you install the correct
Windows

98 driver for your video card which should be on the cd that would have come
with your vido card. If not you will have to find out what video card you
have and go the the manufacturers web site and download the correct driver

Yes, especially if it's the Dell monitor which came with the Dell machine
running Win98.

Tom.. Thank you very much for the repsonse. Can you please tell me how to
find out what type of Video Card I have. I know I bought one when I bought my
Dell 4 years ago, but I didnt see a CD called "Video Card" when reconfiging
the HD.

Tom or PA Bear.

One other question was... If I bought Windows XP and overrode Windows 98 do
you think this would help? Or should I go back and reconfigure using the
REINSTALL Disc that came with my Computer? Ty for your help.. I am most
grateful !!

Cheers lisa

Lisa

The Dell pc should have a Dell service tag number on it somewhere on the
case. If that is located you can go to the Dell web site, go to the
technical support section, goto downloads and enter that service tag number
there which should identify all the drivers needed for your pc. identify the
video driver, dowload & install & that should correct that problem.

The reinstall CD that originally came with your Dell would install the
correct video, and other, drivers for your pc. Without knowing the hardware
specification of your pc it is difficult to say if you would benefit from
upgrading to Windows XP or if you would have more driver isues.

Actually, it is the video card (AKA the adapter) which you cannot configure.

I can't change the screen size. I cant grab the sider to change it on the
display panel. The screen size is set at 630x480 yuck.... It reminds me of
Windows 3.1. Also the Colour. The only choices I have are 2-colour bit !

it.
The upgrade meaning, I think its not reading the Graphic Card. I think it

Oh yes one other thing worth mentioning is. We used my friends Windows 98
disc with the correct serial # and everything.

That's the source of the problem here. That would not automatically
install the correct video card drivers, which would allow you more choices
with regard to resolution.

We didnt use mine as we werent
sure if mine was the correct one. even thou I think it was. as it was

called
REINSTALL WIN98 for Del Computers and his was the Logo'd Windows 98 for PC
without Windows.

Yours is the correct disk for what you wanted to do.

Would that have made a difference you think to this monitor
issue?

Absolutely. His disk is a standard Windows disk.
You can use it, but you won't have all of the drivers installed
automatically for you. You will have some work do to in that regard.
You also will not have any software packages that came preinstalled
on the machine when you first purchased it, such as Office,
or WordPerfect, or anthing else that the vendor may have bundled in there.

The System Restore CD, however, or Reinstall as you referred to it,
will restore your computer to the way it was setup as delivered
to your doorstep when you bought it.

Including the correct video drivers, as long as the video card
came with the PC. If it was purchased and installedafterwards,
then you will need to find the driver CD for the video card
(not the monitor) regardless of which CD you use to install.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions to help me

Lisa B, first fix the problem with 98 or 98SE before considering getting XP.
Also, be aware that XP is extremely complicated and it has a great many more
services than 98 or 98SE and I would suggest that the average person needs to
familarize themselves with these services before they run XP so they can help
to identify when baddies have entered their system and are running. I have
had a much easier time keeping Windows 98SE clean and running well than XP
PRO. but I guess that is due to my knowledge of how the 9x code operates and
my relative ignorance of the NT code in general and myself having no idea
what all the services in XP due wheras I know what everything is that is
running in my 98SE side. I just like XP for the few extras they give me when
I need it and use 98SE as my primary operating system along with Mozilla
Firefox as my primary browser and IE as a back-up and for Windows Updates.
