Default Application Data folder et al

Thanks Shane. I downloaded X-Setup and it works a treat. Another 30Mb out
of my "OS" partition.

Good, glad to hear it Doc.

As I was trying to share settings between OSes rather than save space, I
left the originals in situ - just copyed them over. After a few days I
searched files there in order to determine if they were still in use and -
while there were none newly modified - it hadn't really been long enough to
be conclusive.

I did run for longer without checking, without problems, and suspect that
leaving the original files in situ enables progs with the location
hard-wired, to continue to operate. So, I wonder if moving/deleting *only*
the files of those which *do* read the location from the registry is all
that's required, iow files in the original location will still be found and
modified. Possibly what's required is to copy Application Data to the new
location, note what's there, then run them one by one and see which
location's files are modified, and ultimately delete those in the other?

Like Noel, I've never tried moving the Installer location.

Yep, I can't seem to 'move' it either. I rarely seem to need 'installer'
files, just the occasional 'repair'. I have manually moved them to a
different partition. Hopefully, if I ever need to reference them for a
repair or uninstall then I will be able to point the repairer/uninstaller
to the new folder. Otherwise I shall just copy the required installer
file back to the C:appropriate folder.

Indeed. I've never even thought of moving those ones. It would be
interesting to see how it goes, but I guess I'm just not pushed enough for
space to try it myself. Yes, it is an interesting thought though...

I 'bit' the bullet, copied everything to the new location, booted to DOS
and deltree'd the old c:\windows\application data folder. So far, every
app I have tried has worked OK and used the new location. Still some more
to try, will let you know if I strike any that seems to be hard-wired to
the default folder. (Away for a few days, so any followup will be next
week.)
