Reboot to Safe Mode
Open Device Manager
Remove ALL Display Adapters
Remove ALL Monitors
Reboot to Normal Mode - Windows will reinstall the required drivers -
hopefully curing your problem.

I tried this and got pretty good results, except the reinstall
couldn't find 4 .dll's, a .bin, a .drv and a .vxd.

And the other thing I noticed is that Sistray was running,
along with Systray. There was an unfamiliar icon with an
SIS on it that appeared at bottom right with the other icons.
I ran McAfee, but it didn't detect any trojan...

SIS comes from your motherboard, if you click on it, I suspect you will
find it has to do with your onboard video card. You uninstall CCleaner and
leave McAfee on your machine. Amazing.

More likely the Sound card, Alias, since that's what he just reinstalled.

On my computer, SIS is the on board video card. The OP can find out by
right clicking on it and seeing what options are offered.

What happened when you used System Restore??
Exact details please!

It brought up only one previous snapshot, from that
afternoon. I don't know how it was taken---I didn't do it.
(Next time I will) I selected it and rebooted. The
same problem recurred.

What was the title of the snapshot? - it will usually give a clue as to its
origin,
The fact that you had only the single point is disturbing - and is something
I have recently heard frequently where Cleaner has been used. I'll have a
play and see what it does.
