Networking tutorial?

Ok, as an update on my problem with my very simply SBC DSL
installation... the problem seems to be ZoneAlarm obtaining the wrong
address during bootup. I don't yet understand why this was happening
(IPAutoconfiguration or IP caching or ???) but I got around it by
setting the Speedstream 4100 DSL modem to allow private IP addresses.
That solved the problem. Since that worked I then set the pc to a
static IP address. The 4100 is set to do PPP on the modem so my simple
single pc system is quite simple.

The only thing I would like to find now is whether I should have DNS
enabled on the pc or not. Thanks!

Although DNS is enabled on the PC in both cases, my modem (D-Link
DSL-302G) gives me two options for configuring DNS:

(1) DNS Relay disabled
(2) DNS Relay enabled

In the first instance the PC resolves domain names into IP addresses
by communicating directly with your ISP's DNS server(s). In the second
instance the PC communicates with the modem/router which relays the
DNS requests to your ISP's server. To configure your PC for the latter
option, you would need to enter the router's LAN IP address as the DNS
server address.

My modem's documentation states that "using [option (2)] provides the
advantage that you will not need to reconfigure the PCs or the
ADSL/Ethernet router if the ISP changes their DNS addresses".

My DSL modem provides two options; public IP addressing (default mode)
or private IP addressing. I had trouble using the public IP option but
the private IP option is working well with the pc now having a static
IP for the local link. For now I do not have a router, just the modem
and the NIC. The modem handles the PPP. Thanks.
